That's been a problem at Pilot for as long as I can recall. Anyplace where droves of non-climbing tourists have easy access to the tops of cliffs...

It's not just rocks..glass bottles have been thrown off Pilot as well. A friend of mine was hit with a beer bottle climbing below the parking lot a while back.

Mike's partner was able to identify the three boys in the parking lot, and a group portrait photo was made and sent to the Park office. A ranger found pits in the ground where rocks had been removed about where the boys were seen, with a scar on a ledge from a boulder being rolled off.

There is no specific rule about "trundling", despite constant traffic along the rim, and Lower Ledge Springs Trail being directly along the cliff base with daily hikers as well as climbers. Anyone concerned could write to the state park with an urgent complaint. Posting here is useless. And it is a continual problem at Pilot Mtn. for some distance beyond the summit parking lot. There is a proposal to label the rim trail as Climber Access, but no way to enforce that as climbers-only. Hunting for another overlook is what a lot of "visitors" do there.

Unfortunately, it is a general problem: climbers on the rim kick off or drop things, too, while rigging TR or preparing to rappel especially with a pack. A water bottle that is dislodged from a side pouch is as deadly a missile as a rock. Any compact object dropped 100' (the height nearest the parking lot) will impact at about 55 mph, more than enough to kill.

The other part of the problem, as usual, is people. The more there are....

Just stick to the steeper routes Tongue

In honesty, though, that f***ing sucks. Not much you can do about it but put signs up or something (though I think I recall that there were signs there?)
