Hey Guys,

So about a month ago I was climbing V5, V5+ at my gym. I stopped climbing for a couple weeks because of a family emergency. Now I'm back at the gym and I'm barely doing V3s. Is this normal ? what can I do to get back to where I was?

Perhaps try climbing some more and working your way back up to V5?

were you predominately inactive during your little intermission? if so you lost cardio as well as strength. I would consider bike/run/swim as well as strength training (not too much on weights, calisthenics are best in this situation) and it should come back pretty quickly

Thanks Guys, yes I was inactive. I didn't do any training, or anything active, but I think you're right. I'll start adding cardio as well. So it's normal to lose it after a few weeks huh?

I think it'll come back pretty quick. I wouldn't expect it to take you months to get back to V5. Was this your first session back that you were having trouble? Hell there are times during an average week when I can't send within 2 Vgrades of my "normal" and I haven't taken a few weeks off in five years.

Just climb and you will be back to your previous high point in no time.

I am guessing, even though you have not said this, that you have not been climbing for a very long time overall.

I noticed that when I first started climbing, the first year or two, I "lost" climbing strength/endurance very quickly. Just taking a week-long break was enough to see a noticeable decline in my climbing level.

But now, if I take a break, while I do lose some, especially in the endurance side of things, a week or two don't have that much of an effect. In fact, taking about 2-4 weeks off seems to improve my performance after the break, once that lost endurance comes back.

Lena You're spot on. I've been bouldering for about a year, so Yes. What you describe is exactly happening to me. Thanks for the advice, I already see my strength coming back. Smile
