Since all of us obviously have computers, I was wondering if any of you have played the Rock Climbing PC game?
I heard it's kind of like the way you would play a golf game, like charge up and throw a dyno or something like that, but I never played it, and I was wondering, is it worth buying as sort of a novelty as a gift for a climber? Or even playing yourself?

Steve.

I've played the one that Power Bar sponsored a couple years ago, it entertained me for about 10 minutes. Basically you click on the next hold, and make sure you eat enough Power Bars to have enough energy to grab it.

i hope you're talking about DYNO JOE!
It is a PC based game that I developed...but it has stumbled it's way through sponsorship and finally emerging online...but it should be avaiable this month at dynojoe.com.

It shouldn't cost too much and will be avaliable "shareware" style- play a round or two before you buy...

anyways...

Sry, I wasn't talking about Dyno Joe, I wasn't even aware of that, that's cool though. I'll check it out. Take care.

Steve.

i don't know if "PC" is t6he correct term...but it was developed in flash. It has 13 routes, and three levels starting with "V0" and ending at "V9". It's pretty fun and entertaining. We checked out others that have been tried...and they suck...and obviously weren't created by climbers.

I'll do an official announcement here when it goes live

Not to be rude or anything, and I'm sure the PC game is entertaining, but I'd rather be climbing live than plopping myself in front of a TV and climbing Memorex!

That sounds pretty cool and all, but I was actually referring to one developed by headgames later in the year 99 or so... If anyone knows where to get THAT one, drop a response. Thanks.

monkeysunshine- it should be online in late january or midfebruary...but getting the thing live has been along time coming and we are constantly hitting roadblocks becuase of our own ignorance and responsibilities. i'll make sure there is an announcemnet here at RC. com. It'd be cool to have RC.com championships!;)

Rockhound- That's not rude , That's truth. I'd also rather be outside, but the truth is 60% of my year is spent in front of my computer. Wouldn't it be nice to have something fun to do on my lunch break other than flip through old dog-earred copies of Rock and Ice?

BigHigh Az-you aren't injured now are you?

Easysteve- I use my copy as a coaster...but if you REALLY want a copy- find it on Ebay- it seems like there's always some sucker getting rid of a few there.

Here's a preview of my game-

let me know what you think. You will run into some glitches and dead ends...but I think you'll get the idea.

How about a Expedition version where the player has to handle the logistics of a climb, assembling team, seciuring sponsorship or not, etc. Players could compete for route permits and against other players expedition efforts? Throw in some objective and subjective hazards to lose points. Just a thought.

If anyone wants a copy of the game Everest for only the cost of shipping, I can get one for you, I'm sure shipping is only like .50 to 1.50, if that.

The game is made by GT interactive, and your primary goal is to climb Everest, sound easy? It's a fairly fun game once you get to the second camp. It's a novelty must for all mountaineers, and a good game just for rainy days. PM if you want more information.

nah, no updates as far as status. the game is basically finished- 13 routes and two "dyno throws"...
they get harder and harder. keep asking though!!!

We are simply waiting on setting up a system for purchasing the game. None of us have done this so it's a bit of a learning curve.

When I have time (ie after I graduate) I would like to develop a fairly comprehensive climbing game/guide that could be educational and entertaining at the same time. I am thinking that development will be in C++ and when the time comes I will need to get in touch with some graphic artists cause I suck at drawing and I am assuming that a good game would not be... stick man climbing.

Uncle Old's idea sounds sweeeet. Reminds me of the old-skool Oregon Trail... travel 50 miles, hunt squirrel for dinner, then get typhoid and game over

Great graphics ! keep up the good work.

I think it would be cool to create a RPG role playing climbing game. There would be charters at differnt levels based on your accomplishments. To make it realistic you could create portals to differnt parts of the world to climb differnt routes. To use these portals to more extream routes you will have to prove your self. climbers will start out with basic climbin gear and will be able to buy/trade of take equipment off those who have fallen. there will be an energy level etc... what do you think.

sounds interesting.
I'm hoping to afford to do DYNO JOE II someday ; and have considered using actual photos of boulder problems, and one must figure out the sequence themsleves using tick marks, a guidebook and local beta. A player would have a "Beta button"
and only a certain number of beta opportunities per route.

I also would like to integrate a game like this for educational purposes; you get to anchor and one would have to choose how to put in an anhcor from the options available(horizontal crack, tree, bolts, etc.). Then the game would rate how you did on putting together your anchor. Or how about an AID route!? One must choose the correct piece for the crack, or even have to hook, then they receive a rating at the end of the pitch on how effecient they were.. ORRRR- how about a game where a couple times a week, one goes to the gym and climbs under their limit; then once or twice a month, they go out on a saturday and try to climb above their limit! OOOOOHH that sounds like a reeeeal fun game!

I been playin that game for way too long...

Have you guys seen Doktor KranK Comics? It's an instructional comic book series I'm working on as well.
