How many of you are concerned with your personal appearance when you climb? Has it
ever become a hazard? Is it just me?
I love the outdoors, I love climbing, and I can get just as dirty and sweaty as the guy next to me. Unfortunately, I have been doomed with a bit of girlie-girl in my DNA, and I like to look GOOD when I climb. Call it vanity. It certainly is. Would prAna exist without people like me? However, I won't complain if I'm forced to wear my climbing partner's flourescent purple fleece because I failed to dress appropriately for the weather.
I was always taught to tuck in any loose clothing underneath the waist belt of my harness, because aimless things wildly flapping about could get in the way of my belay device. So, I generally wear tight and close fitting clothes, to fit in with my fasion sense of not looking like a dork with 10 yards of material sticking out from underneath my harness.
However, no one warned me about my hair. I happen to have nice long hair, and I proudly wear it free flowing and loose (the girlie-girl rears its ugly head!). But, I just discovered the hazard of not putting it in a ponytail. It has recently reached mid-back length. On my last few raps, when I'm looking down over my shoulder, my head tilted towards my waist, my hair got caught in my ATC. Ouch! Not wanting to let go of my brake hand, it was certainly a delicate situation (who ever knew I had such a pottymouth?) to get out of (riiiiiiip!).
Anyone else get strange things caught in their belay device, or had a serious accident because of it?
Now maybe if I can only learn not to get the fold of skin from my finger caught everytime I lock my 'biner...

I've also had my hair caught in my rap devise (I'm a guy, by the way). When I get it caught, I wrap the rope around my right leg a few times and then climb a little to give me slack to get my hair out. If I still can't get it out, I tear. It sucks but I like my hair and I won't cut it.
I've also seen a person get their hand pinched in a belay device and then drop someone a short distance.

Heh,heh,my hair too!Woooooooow,actually it was a funny moment...All the guys that i was climbing with [heh,heh]were trying to get my hair out of the ATC... oufffffff!
I didn't have to cut my hair!

I never knew about the possability of that happening til a couple weeks ago a friend told me about how she had to cut her pony tail out with a knife.. that day I had a close call hahah I went ice climbing wearing a friends coat and the sleeve got caught and riped the coat because it was to big for me

I've gotten my shirt stuck in my 8, but I was at the ground, I also got me thumb stuck, and when i was on the ground I had my friend's rescue 8 and got my arm through the big hole all the way up to my shoulder.

I got the web of my hand caught in a grigri one time. I managed to get it out without dropping my partner. That stung!

Yes, I too have had my hair catch my belay device and now have it in a pony tail when I climb, it helps to not have it blow in your face too. My beard is fairly long and I've had it get caught also just pulled a little chunk right out, at least it wasn't enough that it showed.

This didn't happen to me but.. while caving, a girl got her hair caught in the rack. totally ripped out big chunks and we had to give her a hair cut while she screamed in our ears. poor thing, she was okay in the end and didn't care about the job we did on her hair!

I had to climb up and get a some girls hair out of an 8 once. The funny thing was before the rap she said "If anything happens you better save me." I never let her live that down.
At the gym where I work (it is a full gym, I work ONLY the wall) we have to wear these nasty yellow shirts. All the climbing instructors have holes right in the middle of thier shirts because of the Gri-Gri's we *cough cough* self belay with. (that's another topic...) All the other employs think it's funny we all have "Matching holes."

Speaking of bees, that reminds me of a time I got stung on my hand while belaying. Apparently the bee saw my jerky hand movements as a sign of aggression and decided to end his poor little life in a misguided attempt to get back at me. Since I'm mildly allergic to bees, my brake hand started swelling like crazy. I itched like crazy for a week because a tiny piece of its stinger broke off underneath my skin. So, I guess the bee did get back at me in its own way.

while in a toproping course I was standing around listening and I put my bent index finger into a alot on my atc. It took two people to work it off using a nail file and cooking oil. I've yet to live it down...

Well, I've caught my hair in an ATC, caught a shirt in it... now I have a big whole in the front of my shirt...
I've jammed my fingers in one too...wow, don't ya just love the color purple?

I've caught some belly hair and that wasn't pleasant, and bits of t-shirt and thumb web skin. All of this pales in comparison to the woman who got a nipple caught. I didn't witness this event, but heard the epic retelling. OUCH.

i have gotten hair, fingers, many many shirts (i rippec a huge hole in one of my shirts right in the middle and of course all the guys were like hey nice hole!) i got a lil bit of my ear when i turned around one time

I've posted this before on another thread, but my ex-girlfriend got her nipple caught in the ATC at the gym when I took a fall. She didn't tell me about it till I was done the climb. Later she told me she almost passed out from the pain, but let me finish climbing. That wasn't really cool.

I got part of my finger caught in an ATC while rappelling. It piched pretty good a bled a little. Nothing too bad though.
