Anyone have any idea who chopped the bolts on zits at Red Rock in Gloucester? I was there abck in October the first time I noticed it. Is it being rebolted (though the bolts did look pretty new to begin with...)?

I don't know about the bolts, but we're lucky we have that place to climb at all. Last time I was there, my girlfriend and I and some people who happened to be there at the time, prevented it from all burning down. There had been a party the night before, with a bunch of drunks lighting off fireworks. When we got there the top of the rock had a large area that was about to go up in flames. Not everyone is as environmentally concious as climbers.

Peace

More people hurting the already kill Massachusetts rocks? I think we should pull together and start something so that my kids and your kids will be able to climb outdoors in Massachusetts. Anyone with me?

With regard to vandalism and acts of general stupidity, I must say that the "writing is on the wall" for that sort of thing. As far as I can tell, the police view the area as "out of site, out of mind" and I have seen some really bizarre folks walking out of there in the A.M.

I would say if anything, the issues need to be addresses at the Climbing Community level as the local authorities will think nothing of shutting it down with little chance for recourse. The locals (and I know many)already have alot to deal with just in terms of tradtional tourism issues etc.

The bolts on the other hand were clearly chopped by someone with at least enough skill to reach them with a chisel.

Note: If this was done by the FA or the local Red Rock Guys/Gals that have been hanging out there since the 70's, then please disregard the post. I must say though that they probably would have filled the holes.

Bolt chopping is not new at Red Rocks. A fellow climber was telling me that a few years ago some ex-marine old school climber character had chosen Red Rocks as his territory. He actually lived there in the woods for at least one summer, and has been known to take down bolted routes. Too bad he wasn't there to help put the fire out when it was going down in flames! I bet he would have layed the smack down!

That's interesting WW. That sounds strangely familiar to the nut case that boldly pointed out to some on lookers that I was "cheating" and not "really climbing" because I was wearing "those new rubber shoes that stick to everything".

If that's the same guy, he also demanded that the young boy with him (presumably his son) descend a static line down to the middle ledge, hand over hand, no harness.
