I was watching the extreme channel and they had this juy free soloing. they could only film him on the first half of the climb because the altatude was too high for the heli. Any one know what I am talking about? and how the hell does he get down?

Uh...I don't think that any building would be to high for a helicopter to reach Lox. Do you know the altitude that the dude was climbing at? He must have been waaay up there if the heli couldn't fiy that high

"stupid risks make life worth living" ~homer simpson. just b/c it's not something you would do doesn't make it stupid. if he does not fear death then why would it be stupid? ... well that's rhetorical.. b/c it wouldn't be. it' s just something he does. for a thrill. call him psycho, stupid, or a bad example, but remember, labels are your own.

you don't get my point? i kind of spelled it out under the quote... you do realize homer simpson is a cartoon character on t.v. ... and he does not actually think of the words he says... but rather has them written for him. by the likes of matt groening, conan o'brien, et al... very very smart men, indeed

This is sorta like the sport vs trad war. They both bag on each other sometimes. People find their groove, enjoyment, excitement different ways. I've had many people tell me I'm stupid/crazy/whatever because I climb, and i'm sure you all have too. This is the ignorant labeling the minority they don't understand. I think that for the most part climbing is safe, and is very misunderstood. Bagging on soloing is much the same. I've soloed up to 1000' before and I felt completely safe. It was a 5.3 climb that was 5.0 most of the way and I LOVED IT!!! I've also soloed a few harder things, but I either have them wired or they are unprotectable and are usually short. If you want to call me and others stupid because of what we do, then you're one of the ignorant majority as far as I'm concerned.

You are saying that we need to keep in mind that our opinions are just that. Holly crap Batman! I agree. I still think he is a stupid dumbass.

you safety first freaks are dumbasses, if someone trusts their abilities and feels comfortable soloing give them some respect. Moeman, just cuz you are a weak gumby who gets gripped while toproping some pussy jug haul in the gym, doesnt mean that someone who freesoloes has no brains. I am not saying that i am some 5.14, ballsy hardman that solos 5.12. What i'm saying is that you guys are weak dumbases with no respect for the spory.

"you safety freaks are dumbassess" There is simply no arguement to support that. Anyway, oh yeah, I definately admire the courage of the people who free-solo. I still think they are stupid dumbasses. Holds break, concentration fails, and people just plain screw up. All of this magnifies the potential for serious injury when free soloing. Don't get me wrong. I say keep doing what your doing. You just won't catch me doing it or recommending it. I love arguements like this. Round and round and round she goes where she stops, who the f@$k cares.

I think that dumbasses are dumbasses. Really, if the guy has no importance to society or to himself then his free-solo death (which hasn't even happened) isn't such a dumbass thing to do. And then in the bigger picture of how unimportant everyone is since we'll all be gone 100 years from now, who cares. Let him free-solo. "Dumbass" would be to die by making a really stupid mistake, not by taking a calculated risk. Here's one I heard from a doctor just this Sunday... The lady calls up and says her kid ate ants and she wants to know what to do (she's afraid he'll die). The doctor says the ants will die quickly and get digested and not be a problem. Just before the lady hangs up, she says "I guess I didn't need to feed him the ant poison." Now that's dumbass! Free soloing strikes a lot of people- especially beginning climbers, as totally irresponsible, insane and stupid, but it is the ultimate climbing experience. If and when one has the dedication, mindset and level of judgement and physical ability, the freedom of just climbing and climbing- no gear, no rope, nothing cluttering up the sheer joy of going up. I can only speak from my own experience. I have never considered soloing anything that I had the slightest doubt about. I'm not interested in a terror filled epic, so it's always been stuff way, way below the difficulty where I feel even a little dicey. If you do a 6 pitch 5.6, put in one nut per pitch, and didn't feel like you really needed even that, you are very close to soloing. Drop down to a 5.4 with no objectve hazards and have a ball. If you are soloing and being sketchy, you ARE a fool. It's not for showing off, which is how you die. It's more about doing the big easy, free of gear. Some people just get so dang honed that their comfort level is on stuff others can't lead. That doesn't make them stupid. If it's all under control, it's all good.

You guys who begin replies with insults and banal comments are kind of missing the boat here. Consider other's point of view, try to understand where they are coming from, and grow. The knee-jerk, hotheaded, ill-considered, intolerant vomitus of half baked notions which I see so many spew onto these forums contributes nothing of value. Think it through. Then challenge yourself to express the churning urn of youthful (usually) outrage that you have in your belly in civil and articulate terms! Anybody can pound out a "oh yeah!? well $@%&$!! you" Reply. Stand out with your convictions, not your anger, grasshopper.

If the guy isn't married and doesn't have any kids he can freesolo anything he wants and he won't hear me calling him a dumbass. Go for it live your dreams. Change that around where he has a wife and kids and he still freesolos! PURE DUMBASS! At that point you have responsibilities that outweight your dreams.
