We have a kick-ass section on the most incredible climbing site in the universe. We have 80 registered South African rock freaks in here, but why haven't I 'met' any of you?

What is going on? Get in here and get this section going. Dudes, a site is as strong as it's members.
Climbers aren't passive on rock, why be passive on rockclimbing.com?

Hey Rocmonkey

Well Im English not South African but I went to S.A a couple of years ago..spent a couple of months climbing around Capetown..did a bit of trad on table mountain but spent most of the time doing sports routes at places like the 'The Mine' and 'Silvermine' and also journeyed up to Montagu.

Loved every bit of it and fell in love with S.A. I remember climbing at Silvermine and these baboons (I think? - big greyish monkeys)came out. I remember this quite big baboon sitting there watching me from below, I was leading a route and about half way up a climb at the time when this moneky starts to climb up the rock face about 20 feet across from me. I was thinking "Please don't come over here mate"- as he didn't look that friendly. Luckily he stopped, observed me for a bit whilst munching on something and then he clambered back down and followed some other babboons into the trees.

I understand your problem though. Im English and there seem to be hardly any English climbers who check into this web site. Saying that maybe I should check out the UK climbing sites more.

Cheers
Angela

Angela

Glad to hear you liked it in SA. Please let me know if ever you can visit again. The souther Free State is a climbers' paradise.

Please keep in touch as well.
It could have been baboons that you saw, but it could have been Blue monkeys too. Dirty rotten naughty little buggers...

Thanks for the reply and please keep in touch...

Howzit (must sound good to finally hear a South African greeting on this site...

Before I got your email I had almost forgotten this site existed...
I have been interested in climbing for a long time but have only recently gotten envolved, i had to take a break from it because of school, but now that i'm on holiday I will be climbing alot more often.

It's nice to see such a determined and enthusiastic South African around here...
thanks for the invite
Cheers

A big fat grin on my face because I got another member back on rc.com. Wicked!
Hope you get a ton of climbing done before school starts up again.
Please visit this site as often as you can, not just because it is the coolest site on the web, but because as a new climber you will need to get in touch with the experienced 'fathers' of climbing...the are all members of this site.

The South African section has trailed behind the other sections for too long. I have only been the South African Manager for about a week now, but we'll get this section listed as number one in no time - I just need your support.

How's your climbing lately nayjay?

Hope you are still living the dream and taking it high...Keep us updated.

I had an amazing climb this weekend. Got over a crux that had me bothered for months now. It started to rain just before I got past it so I quit the climb when I killed that crux...will finish it next weekend...at least I got past my mental block....

MY COUSINS!!!

What a great site and Rockmonkey, I agree with you, we need to update the South African sub-section of RC.com. East London and the surrounding crags would love to feature and get exposure on the web. Check out your e-mail, I dropped a couple of ideas. Get you butt down to the coast and lets climb the Morgan Bay Cliffs - I'm sure you have had enough of those mielie fields (for all of you non-SA's, mielie is a SA antonym for corn.

I went climbing at The Rock at Gateway Mall today... didn't exactly climb... they don't allow you to have your own belayer... and quite frankly:I will not put my life in the hands of someone I have just met!
any views on this??
would you allow someone you don't know to belay you, i wanna know if i did the right thing by saying HELL NO!

It is an awesome indoor wall. Wicked shit.
The guys that handle the wall at the gym do use grigri's anchored to the floor, but still I dont know if I like the situation all that much.
Anycase it costs R50 for a day pass (expensive) or R100 for a week pass...better.

Let me know when you hit Bloem and we'll make a plan.

I can try to understand that gyms have to protect themselves, but i wont have even a friend belay me that does not know what he/she is doing.
This fact makes it hard to believe that gyms wont let your partner belay you.
Anycase thanks for the post and keep 'em coming.

Howdy Dudes

Nice to see some enthusiastic guys out there in good ol' SA. Rocmonkey, I think that you are doing an excellent job with getting this portion of the site in the faces of the international climbers and good luck to you. If everybody can just put in a little of their knowledge and experiences and some new crags then I think that this country will be the place for people to come.

Middag mense!

Rocmonkey it was great speaking to you on the phone earlier this week and I second airscape on the work you have been doing by putting SA climbing on the international map.

To all you SA folk, hey guys I want to come climb in your backyards sometime so PLEASE update/submit areas/routes/sections for the SA section of http://www.RC.com so we all know where to go and what's good.

What shocks me is that compared to the rest of the country, East London is that this arb speck on the climbing map of South Africa yet our section is oozing information on our crags. Come on guys, lets all get involved and make climbing better and more accessable for all of us!

Thanks for the kind words everyone, but I cannot do it alone. I need you guys to get moving and add all the crag info we need to get this section #1 on rc.com.

Get your butts of the couches and onto some roc. Take the cameras along and bring me specs!!!!

Ek sal eitlik graag in Afr wil skryf maar die ander mensies gaan seker nie te gelukkig wees nie...so...

I have plenty of beautiful pics in the Magaliesberg and Harrismith and The cape mountains. I do not have a scanning facility but maybe I can ask one of my friends to help me out. If there are any other people from PTA I'd be happy to hear from you, I'm constantly looking for someone to go trad or push grades so let me know.

Pleased to hear there are others as well... keep it up!

Hoe in die lewe raak ek ontslae van hierdie "edit" link onder my boodskappe?

Rock on
