I've been wanting to make a rug out of one of my old ropes (you know, wrap the rope around in a flat circle and it makes a circular rug). I'm not sure what the best way is to do it though (do you sew it together? glue it together?) Anyone w/ advice? :D

i havent done this yet but it would make a good dog leash. And jadeclimber, you should stick a carabiner in the middle and wrap it around from there. it would look cool.

Here's what I've done to make stuff from nylon rope in the past.
Make a circular wrap as you have, then use a wood burner, or soldering iron to melt the rope together on the side that is not to be seen. This works really well.
You can even make bowls, and plates/platters this way. They're really tough too.
The one I made was out of old Lasso type rope, but it would look really cool with climbing rope too!

I have been climbing 15 years and have yet to retire a rope.
My rope is 8 years old, has less lead falls on it than years in service and is really supple and nice.
No, I will not sell it to you. It's a conversation piece !

I just retired my first rope after about 4 years. It was an 11mm so I wanted something lighter anyways.
It is now used in my garage for rapelling. I have a 16 foot garage and a bolt ladder up one wall. I practice all sorts of things on it.

I have just bought my first rope a couple weeks ago. Although i havn't reitred it yet, but i know the day will come. I already have many ideas of what might be done with it. Practice rappeling, ascending, transitions from one to the other. All kinds of fun stuff. :D

You can give your old rope to a climbing gym,then trade it for a free day pass, or for a week. Those gym ropes always look very old.Hey maybe I'll do that too. :wink: 8)

1. lead line
2. rap line
3. haul line
4. canyoneering rope.
it should be beat to dust at the end of that.

depends on how old the rope is and the condition..i either use it for top ropes or a rap line for bolting on rappel...i dont know how a gym would feel about taking a old rope since they have no idea of its history such as falls use and how well it was taken care of..might be a big insurance issue also

I just scored a few old ropes from the gym I work at and hopefully more soon when we replace the existing ropes. I was wondering what to do with them.. I tried to weave a rug but, well, all I got was a big knot. I dig the melting idea though. I'd like to try a not-so tight rope rig.

Two suggestion:
1) tie a big 150 pound weight to it, anchor it, and then toss it off of a hundred foot cliff....see if it breaks!!!11
2) keep it in your car to use to tow your care, or other cars out of ditches and stuff.
or, just do what I do,
3) use it to do some rope flying (obviously a joke!!!)

when your rope is just waisted and you don't think it can take one more picth you save it and fix it next to your real rope on the first few piches of and route you want to keep the traffic off of. Leave a note at the base.. One of these ropes is cut or only tied with a overhand knot or both.... This will keep fags from jumping on your hard work and putting use on your lines........Maybe some dick will jug it and fall to their death......
