Ha, there's soooo much slagging of bolting & sport climbing these days I thought I'd toss this one out there: is ascending a rock face using your gear really climbing? All other forms of rock climbing involve hands & feet for the ascent & gear for safety...so what's up with aid? I'd just get bored clipping all that gear...

Aid is an art form, it's not just pulling on gear. Try placing 15-20 beaks in a row, and then tell me it's boring. HA,Ha, maybe it's just for the madman.

In the old days, aid was used to make things easier. Now we use it to make things harder. And yes, aid can go from resting on a piece, to standing on bolts (totally legal!), to full on breath-holding, pants-soiling, diety-praying, will-writing wall climbing. It's the free climbing that sucks while aiding. TRADitionally yours, Addiroids P.S. I wonder if Ninjas would be good at hard aid?!?!

I once attended a slide show by Royal Robbins and he told a story of his daughter, about 11 at the time, asking how he climbed up the Salathe on El Cap. When it was explained to her how aiders were used her responce was, "So you don't really climb it?" The look on Royals face went all contourted as if he had just been slapped! We all had a good laugh knowing that of course he had climbed it, and in proud style!!

No. It's not climbing. And it's absolutely no fun. No skill is involved and it's only a challenge to those who are fat, lazy, and out of shape. You should never even consider trying it. Not worth the effort. You would definitely be bored. No excitement to be had there, nope, none what-so-ever. I've been bored out of my mind every time I've tried it, but it's all I can do since I'm horrible at free climbing. Bored, I tell ya. Ed

Ice climbing requires the use of plastic boots, crampons, and ice TOOLS; hands and feet don't touch the ice. Is it still considered climbing?

Nope! Ice climbing sucks, too. It's only for wussies and ner-do-wells. And MAN is it boring. I don't recommend you try ice climbing, Saltspringer. Just not gonna be climbing unless you jab your fingers and toes through the ice to make upward progress.

"I'd just get bored clipping all that gear..." Climb about 40 ft off the ground...Better yet, get 1000 feet of exposure going and climb 40 ft off a ledge with no pro. Now stand on a marginal hook. I bet you find yourself bored to tears. I like the new FISH banner..."It probably ain't for you."

Hey cantwinifyoudontplay, You mean to tell me that there is no way you can die while sport climbing??? Really??? WOW! This whole time I have been lugging gear around for no reason. I guess I will just leave my helmet and other safety gear in the trunk next time I hit the crags, thanks to your wonderful advice. I didn't know bolts couldn't fail! Better yet since I can't die in the gym, I think I might not even tie in while I am trying that 25 footer. Thanks for the EXPERT advice! Chris

Chris its all about style. dying in the gym or on a sport climb would be very poor form. you die on baffin island and you go down as a hero!

According to John Salathe, aid is the only true form of climbing. Everything else is just hiking.

Yes. It is. I have never jugged, hammered, or stood in aiders and I still consider it quite legitimate. _____ climbing isn't really climbing! Jeebus. This is the most juvenile form of spray. Shut it already! Hey, has anybody noticed how long ago this thread was started?

Yes Aid Climbing is Climbing. Think what you want, but stop criticising other climbers because in your small mind you believe that one type of climbing is "better" than another. Aid is Climbing. Deal with with it. And another thing. What's with boulderers saying that bouldering is better because it is more pure? We all get to the top of the rock right? AID RULES!!! Jimmy

Personally, I have no interest in aid climbing; I like to climb the rock, not my gear. However... Is it climbing? Of course it is! It's very technical climbing, requiring a great deal of skill and effort. It is no less climbing than sport or trad or bouldering, & my hat's off to those who climb those giant fuggin walls. To each his own, you know. But I must flame a bit here, not about aid climbing but about... Euroford wrote... "its all about style. dying in the gym or on a sport climb would be very poor form. you die on baffin island and you go down as a hero!" Climbing is all about style? Not in my world. You go on & be fashionable if it makes you feel good. IMHO style's got nothing to do with it. Just my 2 cents worth.

Is Aid Climbing climbing? Yes. From what I can see, the people bitching here about pulling on gear need to come back when their membership at the gym expires and mommy or daddy breaks down and gives them the car keys. Is it climbing? Jesus. And what's up with the anti sport climbing Dr. F#$&intrad? It's all climbing and hopefully one day it will turn into an art form for you as well. Is it climbing? BRANK!!!!!!!!!!!!! Take everything to the next level.

Aid climbing was climbing back in the day. How do you think those bolted sport roofs got bolted? thats right, on aid. If it wasn't for the aid gear heads you probably wouldn't have bolts to clip, and your trad gear wouldn't be as good. I rekon that most rock pro is designed by aid climbers.
