Hi all,
This is an alert to inform you and the entire local climbing community of
our intention to remove the numbers on Pete's Rock in early spring. While
the practice may have been acceptable at one time, this is the type of
behavior and impact that will create future and potential access problems in
climbing areas. The numbers take away from the beauty of Mt. Olympus and
scenery behind Pete's Rock. It simply looks like graffiti and considered to
be such by many. Several organizations have come out in support of our
intentions such as, The Wasatch Mountain Club, Save Our Canyons , Salt Lake
County, The Access Fund, and the US Forest Service.

Before this activity occurs, we want to hear from the local climbing
community and receive input on this matter whether it is in favor of or in
opposition to the proposed project. We have been given the impression
there is a single individual who is repainting the numbers year after year.
We have been unable to locate this individual and if any
of you have any information about this, we would appreciate hearing from
you. A community meeting concerning this and upcoming projects TBA. SLCA
Board will meet again on March 12th.

Thanks,
SLCA Board

You do mean remove numeric images painted on the rock face don't you? Not limit the number of people who can climb?

If it is a vandalism problem, I don't think the climbers are to blame for it.

as a side note, theres a big blank smooth slab section about ten feet long that lies above and to the right of the first top roping area. I was wondering why it's there. theres nothing below it and one other bolt about twenty feet above it. were did these come from?

Historically, the numbers were painted on the base of each route just to designate which route was which. Wasatch Mountain Club cliimbers and others have been using Pete's as a practice area for at least 45 years, and probably more.

Blindslap, do you mean "The Cube"? The quartzite outcropping that sits up on the bench about 2-4 minutes up the Mt Oly trail? There is a bolt on the east north facing slab that protects (well, I shouldn't say "protects", it is a 1/4" buttonhead after all) a south face top-rope route. Back that thing up if you use it. There used to be several rusty pitons up there that have since been removed....
