I've recieved plenty of comments at the crags that were meant as compliments. And I appreciated it, but the net effect was to make my head swell. I suppose the best compliment I ever got was when a rather good-looking young betty hit on me in josh, i assume based purely on my climbing ability (it SURE wasen't looks), knowing full well I had a full time, live in girlfreind, who is now my wife, the lovely dominatrix Jocelyn.

But...the best feeling I ever get in climbing is scratching over the top of a route or boulder, maxed, pumped, feeling like i'm gonna hurl... then resting alone on top, digging the view of josh or big rocks or the henrys or canyonlands or the draw or the deep green peterskill woods...yeah, the best compliments are the unspoken ones we feel deep in our bones, when we know we've sent 'cause we ignored the consequences of failure, gave it everything, and gutted it out. climbing is about what you feel in your heart and head, not the transient "yeaaah doods" that your homies serve up like all-you-can-eat sushi...even though they count, too, at some level. last word? i've found if you've been climbing with yer buddies long enough, 10 years, 20years, 30 years, compliments become rare and superfluous. we know what one another are thinking without having to say it.

bvb, great post. I am new to climbing but that is EXACTLY what has attracted me to it. The feeling I get when I reach for that hold and stick it when I really thought I'd fall...

BVB! WOW! That is so true.

We just got back from spring break, and our math teacher was asking everyone what they did over the break. I said " I went rockclimbing and lead my new personal best rating wise- a 5.11 if that means anything to anyone. Took two good falls, and felt great at the end of the day." Then she starting being all sarcastic and was all "Well alteast you felt good about your self. Everyone else feel good about themselves" along with this odd laugh. I was like, ok what ever, what did she mean to get across by that?

Its about the personal reward of the climb/s and NOT what OTHERS think after the route.

Oh and that same trip over spingbreak I onsited this other route that had a Dyno at the end, it was the last hold before the anchors. I stick it and you could just see the shock in their eyes. Smiling and just saying "SWEET! I can believe you stuck that!" Shaking their heads in disbelief.

The best compliment is seeing the suport and apreciation in your partner's faces/eyes. Not necicerily what comes from their mouth.

The biggest compliment I have ever had as far as climbing goes is when after topping out on an awesome multipitch my climbing partner and I look at each other and we shake hands with nothing said. Of course I always break the spell and rabbit on about how awesome it is that we survived and I never thought that I would ever have been able to do anything like that.

Since I seem to be able to avoid virtually all interaction with the opposite sex the only compliments I ever get are really more like backhanded compliments like"

1. "Your feet don't seem to stink as much as last week."
2. "It took some time but I think I have gotten used to your stench."
3. "When was the last time you combed your hair? No really, it looks good though."
4. "That couch is pretty nice. It is hard to believe sombody actually threw this thing away."
5. "You are stronger than you look."

I CANNOT STOP LAUGHIN'!!!!!

T!

Noticed a pair of middle aged couples on the street looking at me. One of the women pointed straight at me and said, "Look at his forearms." 8)

I've had the "Your arms are so muscley" compliments, and the "I love your stomach" ones from several people. And then there's those who are just jealous, but I won't say what they say to me.

seein as im only 17 and have only been climbing for a year now i dont think im horrible. i went to "shoals" this psat weekend ( in indiana) yes there is rock here  and the guy that i was with is a relly good climber. he asked me if i wanted to try to lead a route (sport has nothing to do with my screen name  ) and i wass really excited. so we get ther and i top roped a 5.10a which to you guys is nothing and can do it with one hand and one leg, lol but for me thats pretty good. there was thid pretty solid crimper and that was about all there was for like 4 feet and i grabbeeedd on to it and somehow got up. but when i was bein lowered down i looked at the hold and iwas amazed on how i did that. it was my real first outside climb. when i got down my belayer was like man you looked awesome up there, gongrates on your first 5.10a. so yea thats was pretty cool for me and now i know im a 5.10a climber (top rope).

p.s. never did tru the lead it look scary as hellbein that far away from the lsat bolt, clippin in and fallin right after i clipped to the bolt and not the rop....i would not be ready forbut yea thats my 2 cents

anytime i am climbing and there is that fury of exitement every boulderer knows... when all the people down on the ground (even those who don't like this particular climber so much...) are yelling and excited and waiting for the send, and then you just get caught up in it and push so hard, you can't see what is happeneing, your body just moves and everything feels so solid, and then, as you stick that last hold, there is that yell and that look of approvement, of respect, from everyone on the ground, even those ten time better than you.

I got the "are you a pro?" question once when I was in Russia cause my jacket (which I bought) happened to match my fleece (which I won at a comp) and I looked "sponsored".

Also a few days ago a friend of mine told me "Man, I can never tell when you're working hard at it." after I told him the last climb had worked me. Then again I guess that could be an insult. ;-)
