Heading to j-tree for my first time over memorial day weekend. Any suggestions on things not to be missed while in the park? Any camp sites that I should avoid like the plague? The plan is to only climb part of the time so im looking for other tourista type stuff.

what level do you lead?
I can not even imagine what the temps. are going to be on Memorial Day. Stay in the shade. My friends were very warm on Sunday. I was in Zion.

Keys View at sunset. Hike up Ryan Mountain first thing in the morning. Check out the Cholla Gardens over in Pinto Basin on the east side of the Park. Bike the loop: wherever you're camped -> 29 Palms -> Joshua Tree -> back to camp. Go peak-bagging: Queen Mountain or Pinto Mountain. Walk the Hidden Valley nature loop, reading the signs. Wander the Wonderland of Rocks and pick up litter. Hackey Sack on top of Intersection Rock. Chill out and plan your next trip.

I can lead .10a on sport and up to .9 on trad. Id like to keep any climbing to below easy .9 and single pitch only because the girlfriend will be with me. Is there enough single pitch sport so I can leave the rack at home? We are flying so Id like to not have any problems like losing my $rack$. On the topic of racks, can I just pack it and put it through as checked luggage? Will it cause problems?

Sorry, I don't sport climb in JT. There are too many great cracks to climb there. As for recommended EASY 5.9's that are in the shade, hmmmmmm
Popular Mechanics (5.9)
Hands Off (5.8)
Sail Away (5.8- and maybe lower)
continuum (5.8+ easier if you are shorter)
Invisibility Lessons ( 4 feet of solid 5.9 moves)
Pope's Crack (It is in the sun all day but it is an easy 5.9)
The Eye (5.1 - Don't be a grade snob. This climb is fun and funky. It is in the shade and has any easy walk off)
The Crossroads Cafe is the only place to eat in JT.
You might get better responses if you put JT in the subject line. There are a lot of more experience people than me on this site.

Bring a rack, there are very few routes that you don't need gear on. Even most of the bolted lines need gear for the anchors.
Hike Ryan Mountain at night, it is a lot shorter of a hike then it looks.

I love 5.1 as much as I love 5.10.

I flew to AZ a couple weeks ago. I checked my rack and had no problems at all. They didn't even search the bag. I would have know as it was locked. I wouldn't worry about it at all. I did take pics of my gear, just in case it got lost some where, but I do that with most of my stuff before I travel anyway. Have fun and don't fret the airlines.

I agree - take your rack to J Tree. I've flown with my rack a few times since 9/11 and not had any issues whatsoever.
Just wandering around with your guidebook, looking for formations is a great way to get a hike, see the gorgeous cacti and wildflowers, and get to know the lay of the land. You'll save yourself a lot of time on future trips. People even get confused in simple places like the real Hidden Valley, trying to find the classics in there. And wait until you try to find Mental Physics in the Wonderland the first time!
If you have the time and $$$, spend some time at one of the spa/resorts in the Palm Springs area and pamper yourself. I like Miracle Springs in Desert Hot Springs. You can buy some kind of pass to use the hot pools - wonderful in the evening after a few days of climbing. They also have all kinds of great beauty treatments - facials, wraps, massage etc. The whole body mud wrap is superb!

The rack is going. We are staying at indian cove and plan to go to wonderland of rocks and maybe hit palm springs for a mud bath. Lots of hiking to be done, hope its not too too hot out. Thanks everyone for your help/advice.

There's a good hike to an oasis at cottonwood springs on the south end of the park. It's 4 miles one way, not too strenuous. I did it a few months ago when it was cooler, in a nice breeze.
It does take an hour to drive there from hidden valley, and I don't think that side of the park is as beautiful, but there's lots of different plant life/terrain out there, and you can see the Salton Sea from Mastodon pk.
