I have been told that everything in K country and Bow valley have been closed off to all climbers & hikers etc for the time being until we get more rain. Has anyone heard of what MAY be open before we drive 4 hours to climb??? We plan on hitting the road in a few hours, but not sure if the drive will be worth it if there is nowhere to climb. HELP!! Cheers Nathalie :D

We were there Saturday and it rained a bit, but definately not enough. Have you tried calling the forest service or the gym in Canmore? Tourist info places? I'm sure there's a 1-800 # somewhere.

Grab a helicopter from Canmore to Assiniboine Lodge. You can stroll up Assiniboine right now unroped and in tennis shoes! Abnormally hot summers do have their silver linings. Brutus

I headed out yesterday to do some sport at heart creek and there was no access at all. We headed over to Goat and Kid Goat was the only wall open, did a nice 4-pitch climb called Gray Waves; which is right beside Keel Haul Wall. We ended up rapping off in near darkness and hiking out in almost complete darkness. In hindsight I shouldn't have left the headlamp in the truck  I haven't been down towards K-country in a while but if it is anything like Bow Valley, YIKES!

Was going to go to Wasootch Slabs on Sunday but found out that every thing was closed in that area. Went to Heart afterwards and was just way to smoky out. Not worth it right now. Hopefully we'll get the rain soon....... Cheers, Mark.

Not sure about couger but it most likely is. There basically closing down everything especially places that require you exit the way you came in like couger grotto heart etc. I was there last weekend at grassi teaching a noob and it was jam packed because basically everything else was closed (now it is too I guess) What kind of climbing are you looking to do? if your desperate you can come down to waterton and do some trad on tick ridge or the bears hump 5.6-5.9 multi pitch trad. easy acsess and no threat of closure right now. (Ill probably be climbing on the hump on Sat depends if I can sneak away from my work). let me know what your plans are. cheers

Cougar, along with everything else in the Canmore/Banff area is closed. Back of the Lake is the only place that is open, for now. CO's are actively patrolling access areas. If they see a car, they hike in and nail you. Poach at your own risk.

Thanks for all the feedback, we are not planning our next trip out now until the sept long, hope that is enough time to get some rain. Can we keep updating this thread over the next couple of weeks? It would be great to know in advance if we should do the 4 hour drive down south ahead of time. We are looking to climb mainly sport single pitch climbs, but I am open to some shorter multipitch climbs provided they are sport. Thanks again for the updates!!!

I guess that would include Barrier then, damn, what's a girl to do?? Looks like that leaves back of the lake, (too far for a week night) or prairie (dark hike out). I'm feeling super gipped, it's the last few weeks of after work climbing before we run out of light.

Hey what's the # for the fire ban info? I guess that pretty much means nothing is open. If Louise is the only place I'd imagine there will be thousands of people there this weekend, not really worth the drive, god i can't believe i just said that. Kid Goat may still be open...

I heard at the gym last night that the likelyhood of anything opening up for the long weekend is slime to none!!!! What on earth am I going to do?? This will be the first long weekend all summer with no climbing - it is a tragedy what nature can do!!!

We need 3 to 4 days of good, consistant rain in order to soak the tinder box that is Southern Alberta. That's not in the forecast. It'll be a while.

http://www3.gov.ab.ca/srd/ - this is one of the gov. sites to find info on closures and fire bans. Check with forestry services before you head anywhere you think might be open, It's $5000 fine if inside a restricted area. Cheers
