Mt. Lemmon lives! Go here to see how things are shaping up for us... it's much nicer than the reaction to last year's Bullock fire :) Many popular areas, like the majority of the Windy Point crags, and Munchkinland, are closed, but there's still hope. Notably, Ridgeline, which was damaged in the Bullock fire, is open.

Mt. Lemmon Fire Report, from climbaz.com

Aspen Fire burn map

Here's the juicy stuff:

Burned:

Chessmen, Faded Rock, Mean Mistreater Wall, the Fins, Beaver Wall, Nurd Rock, Punch and Judy and vicinity, Wind Wall, Hunchback Pinnacle, Iranian Wall, Troll Wall (probably Munchkinland), Palisades Ridge Rocks, the entire mid-mt. strip between the upper and lower hwy. from the Pharaoh all the way to Windy Point, parts of Lizard and Middle Earth areas (as best as I could tell).

Not Burned:

Hairpin, Hidden Jewels, Weathertop areas, Green Slabs, Panorama Wall, Hearthstone, Friction Rocks, Chimney Rock, Hitchcock Pinnacle, the Stones area, Wheeler Wall, San Pedro areas, Barnum, and the Druid is probably good, too.

No cars or foot traffic allowed above the Ski Valley area.

Cool :)

Sorry, definitely not cool. We'll take what we can get, but this is tragic.

Remember, this was a human-caused fire.

I would think that the re-opening of a burned out climbing area, would be a cool thing, actually. We've got to go through this ourselves now, hopefully we even get updates as to the burnt areas.

Part of the mountain is open again. I'm happy enough about that.

Thanks to Hillary for bringing us the news, and for putting a positive spin on it.

"Tragic" referred to the loss/disfigurement of the reason I moved to Tucson. (I sort of live there still, part-time.)

Mike, have you ever revisited a place you dearly loved, a place that holds cherished memories for you, after it burned? The rocks are still there, maybe the bolts are still reliable. Some of it will even recover in our lifetime. But much of Mt. Lemmon is now just a memory, as far as its natural beauty is concerned.

As for updates...

All of our crags are burning right now actually, so I will experience it...I'm just saying that you gotta look on the bright side of things: you've still got something open to climb on, and fire didn't ravage every inch of your crag, right? Meanin' no offense, just a 'glass is half FULL' thing. :-)

Cheers!
Mike...
