I'm curious what everyone thinks about the wealth of new climbing gyms soon to be open in the Phoenix area?

Solid Rock Gym up on the north side, I-17 & the 101 (off Pinnacle Peak)
http://www.solidrockgym.com

AZ On The Rocks - Scottsdale (101 off Princess Drive)
http://www.azontherocks.com

Surprised nobody said anything about this yet...seems a lotta people would be totally psyched to see lots of cool new indoor terrain as well as maybe cutting down on a lot of cross-city driving for the weekday workouts.

Comments?
G.

I cant see there being a market for 2 new gyms. although they are quite far apart from eachother.
Im a PRG regular and am going to desert them as soon as az on the rocks opens. Im tired of sweating my ass off in 100 degrees in the summer when he's too cheap for AC.
the new gym looks excellent too, with the lead wall and a decent bouldering area big pluses. 40 minutes of extra drive time but i think it'll be worth it.

40 minutes and I can be on real rock.

I don't really care since I don't gym climb much.
I am closer to the other two anyway. And if I had to drive that far north I would rather just go outside. Like Pinacle Peak or the Mcdowells. Use the money for gas and climb real rock. But if some one gives me a free pass I would check it out.

For those of us that work until 5 or six during the week, gyms are the only option monday through friday.

I am happy to see new gyms opening in Phoenix, I think PRG has been somewhat guilty of taking advantage of the fact they are the only gym in town. No air conditioning in one of the hottest cities in the country is pretty ridiculous. I'd be willing to bet PRG's lead wall gets finished a little faster now too.

Sorry man, I did'nt explain that I work construction and get off work by 1 to 3 pm. I am able to get in some routes or bouldering in before dark.

7 pm? That sucks!

I was aware of AZontheRocks, but not solidrock. I, too, will be heading to one of those instead of the PRG. Dief is a ncie guy, but the conditions are unbearable and not necessary. I think a lot of climbers who train regularly at the PRG will hold this against him for enduring YEARS of swealtering temps in his gym and will bail for one of the new ones. It will be interesting to see the pricing at the new plastic palaces. If it's considerably more expensive, the interest may be fleeting and Dief may get most of the business back at the PRG. At least during the winter.

Any definitive opening date for either of the new gyms?

one of you "rich climbers" out there put in a little effort and open one on the southeast side... ocotillo and alma school or so... it'd be a hot market i swear...

2 more does saturate the market, but at least while there are 4 open, it'll cut the crowds down a touch (until 1 or 2 fold) and maybe dief'll get some AC and finish the lead wall quick... well put bill.

Maurice~ I was planning on heading to AZ on the Rocks too, before I saw the prices. They don't offer monthly and daily is a little out of my league. The yearly is more than I can handle at once, and would not be worth it considering the amount of breaks/injuries I take during the year. I would defintely head up there if it was cheaper, though.

i haven't heard of Solid Rock either, but it appears it will be opening in the first week of November. Might head up there instead as the prices at AZ on the Rocks are too steep for me.

Thanks for the breakdown Erica.

Azontherocks does sound a bit steep. Given where I live I wouldn't be all that enthusiastic about driving to N. Scottsdale or N. Phoenix. I just hope the other gyms opening motivates PRG to get some AC and upgrade the facilities a bit. (Lead Wall!)

what a rip off. 140 dollars for a ten visit pass. i thought it was 90 for 10 visits, but thats the discount rate..
Hmmm, may be rethinking my rushing off to the new gym now. but i think i may suck it up. i only intend going once a week, so thats 140 for 2 1/2 months of climbing.
It is steep though.. i suspect it wont do too well at those prices, especially if PRG gets the lead wall open. hmmm..

Too bad I just moved from the area! It was a hefty drive from my house to PRG, and the new locations are much closer to my house.

Erica, you should check out their opening deals.
500 for a year for 2 people(half price). if you and ivan got one, it would be 5 dollars a week. thats pretty sweet.
I spend $480 a year in PRG...

I travel a lot, and try to get to the local gyms when I can.

Trust me when I say that PRG has great rates for what you get. $15 - $18 is not uncommon for a day pass.

Also the route setters at PRG do a great job compared to the whacky stuff you find at some places.

I don't think there is a Climbmax 2.... From what I understand, Mike was helping out the AZ on the Rocks guys (or maybe Solid Rock??), but I don't think he was opening up his own gym.

Maurice~As far as the $$ for a year, that does sound like a good price for the both of us, but we can't afford to just pay that up front. And seeing as how I go to the gym about 8 times a month, that means $140 a month?? No, thanks. Plus, with those prices, what is the reality that we'll be climbing with/meeting real climbers in there? I can only see very affluent people affording memberships. Also, the hours kind of worry me.

I'd actually consider going to the Solid Rock one. I work downtown, so I may just bring my gear to work, and head up the I-17 from there. If PRG gets A/C and a lead wall, I'll head back down to Tempe. I'll miss 4 Peaks, anyway ;)

hmmmm...i'm thinking about heading to the N scottsdale gym when it opens up. I mean, PRG is 32 hrs away, and the new gym is 32 & 1/2 hours away. I think its worth the extra drive time. hehehehe - seriously though, that new gym sent me the offer about the 2 for 1 membership deal....all the way to Atlanta. Now that's commitment to marketing.

 ...you goof.

Well, considering it'll take you 32 hours to get there, 32 hours home, then 32 hours back, we should try and go Mon. and Thurs. It might be too ambitious for you to do the normal Tues/Thurs routine.

;)
