October 29, 2003

We can't even begin to express our feelings about the current fire devastation in San Diego County. It's a nightmare that touches us all.

The media is doing a pretty good job of keeping everyone informed on the general situation, so this newsletter will simply focus on the state of local climbing areas.

1. Mission Gorge ......
There is NO damage to the Mission Gorge climbing area. The entire hillside that holds the climbing rocks is untouched by fire. However, much of Mission Trails Park was burned so the entire park is currently CLOSED to ALL VISITORS both drive in and walk in. The authorities are being extremely conservative because hot spots still exist in the park, and they have no estimate when the park will be reopened.

2. Santee Boulders ......
Approximately 80% of the Santee Boulders area was burned. Some of the rocks have mild black soot marks on them. The only rocks untouched by fire are the ones on the south hillside facing the West Hills Park parking area. You might want to avoid this area until we have had at least one good rain, especially if you have sensitive lungs.

3. Mt. Woodson ......
We have no first hand accounts of Mt. Woodson's status, however, a second hand report says that while much of the land around Woodson was burned, the mountain itself was spared. Can someone please give us an actual first hand onsite report.

4. Poway Crags ......
We have no first hand report on Poway Crags or the Iron Mountain approach trail, but this area was directly in the path of the fire so we assume it was burned. Can someone provide a first hand report.

5. Dixon Lake ......
We have no first hand report on Dixon Lake, however we do know that the Dixon Lake campground was evacuated. Can someone provide a first hand report.

6. El Cajon Mt. ......
Much of El Cajon Mt. seems to have burned, the parking pullouts along El Monte Rd are badly burned. However the fire moved very rapidly through this area burning mostly grass and small brush. Most of the trees were spared.

7. Descanso Wall ......
There is currently still a major fire burning in this area and we must assume that the climbing wall area was burned. Interstate 8 is currently closed in this area so you can't even get to it.

8. Corte Madera ......
We have no reports on Corte Madera but maps of the fire area indicate it was probably spared. However, Interstate 8 is currently closed in this area so you can't even get to it.

9. Valley of the Moon ......
We have no reports on Valley of the Moon but maps of the fire indicate it was probably spared. However, Interstate 8 is currently closed in this area so you can't even get to it.

10. Lawson Peak ......
We just don't know.

11. Stonewall Peak ......
This is currently the scene of a major fire and the roads in are currently closed. We have no information but must assume it was probably burned.

Here's a 10/30/03 update to the original post, also courtesy of Art Messier at SDCC:

1. Additional Fire Info for Mission Gorge ......

John Barone, Senior Ranger at Mission Trails Park, has informed us that his latest estimate for reopening the park (and the Mission Gorge climbing area) is Monday, November 17.

Yes, that's the next 3 weekends.

Things may change, but we are certain that Mission Gorge is closed this weekend Saturday and Sunday Nov 1 & 2.

PLEASE HONOR THIS TEMPORARY CLOSURE. DON'T TRY TO SNEAK IN AND GIVE CLIMBERS A BAD REP.
