Ok..how many of you do now...used to...have been tempted to? It sorta struck me the other day, that when climbing was a lot more important in my life I used to strech the truth from time to time regarding my climbing. I'm not sure why I did it, maybe weak ego or some shit like that, but no matter..many do it...so whats your biggest, latest or just plain small white lie? I guess mine was telling people for many years that I did the Horse Chute on the El Cap, when in reality we got bouted right below the Chute...too hot I guess and going to slow. come on fess up

well gym climbing and reefing on gear is kinda synonymous...so it wasn't really a lie...you were just lying to yourself that it mattered..

I didn't say I grabbed it, I was just tempted. That in itself is a sin and I will burn in the fires of hell. (By the way, if you couldn't tell, I was just directing sarcasm towards your topic)

Nope sorry. Never lied about something as trivial as climbing accomplishments. I do lie to myself everytime I buy gear though, you know things like... "I would feel bad if I actually ha dmoney in the bank" "I NEED this (insert gear here)."

In the top 5: Sure, that cam will hold. All that redundancy is a waste of time. One nut's good for belay. You look good in pink spandex. You scared? Nope. Me neither. It's a little slopey.

In the morning..... "Oh the drive, I don't know, maybe an hour...hour and half tops........" Three and half hours later...... "The approach is real easy, maybe 15 minutes....." Two and half hours later and seven miles later...... "well it's rated 5. 8) but this guidebook featherbags everything, your lead." Several hours later..... "no we have time for another route, it won't be dark for awhile.....a headlamp? Oh yeah I have one or two in my pack..."

Once I said I farted, but I actually crapped my pants (hey, I had the flu), and I had to stand there and act all casual until everybody went off climbing for the day. To this day nobody suspects, but my conscience is killing me.

Told one today: "Centaur looks fat, man! I don't think we'll even have to do any mixed and I bet the "R" section is cake. " Of course, the rock rack's getting snuck into my pack...

Sometimes I say that I am only leading 5.12 trad when it is really 5.14. I suppose I am not comfortable with my talent. Let begin by being honest. My name is Eric and I am an amazing climber...LOL

8) My biggest problem over the years has been with climberz math. Seems like after a few beers that 12 foot whip turns into a 20 footer 8) Then of course there is the old standby procedure of tricking your partner into doing a climb that is way over their heads, "you'l love it" It won't be too cold and we will cruise it any ways so you won't get cold 8)

It's really easy to get to the crags...(kayak across the bay: 4 hours hike to the crags: two hours) i fell off that cliff! really! i didn't jump! It LOOKED like ten feet... (Five monthes later after surgery on my shattered ankle, foot, and dislocated elbow...) Yeah, this one is easy...go for it! :P My finger hurts. You lead it. :D

To parents or girlfriend: "Yes, I'm still saving money even though I just bought two new cams. Besides, I got a good deal on them, so they didn't cost that much..." To girlfriend: "Don't worry, I'll be back from the crag at 2 and then we can go do something together" or: "Of course I'll be back in time for work. Don't worry" at 5 after deciding to do one (or 4) routes too many: "I swear, it wasn't my fault we were late. The party in front was really slow. Then we got stuck at the top...."

No, honey...they were on sale! yeah, the cams too! Can you believe they only had one pair of 41.5's left---floor model, I guess. The harness had a ittle discoloration on it, I guess....what? No, I've had those curvenuts for a while...don't you remember that time in New Paltz when you cleaned these on high E? No? I might have jsut brought some cams that day....No, Arc'tyrex jackets are pretty cheap, comparatively, I think I got this one for like 50 bucks or something....

Lie? No. Except maybe on rc.com. I could be Chris Sharma and you wouldn't know it. Ha! Ha! Oh, expcept for the picture in my profile (Doh!) Seriously, if you lie about your climbing, then you are not climbing for yourself. You're climbing for other people and I think that maybe you should quit climbing and go buy a muscle car with flames on the sides and do donuts in some crowded parking lot. And we could just admire how cool you are. Everyone thinks that the guy that peels out is cool, right? Josh

In reply to: Seriously, if you lie about your climbing, then you are not climbing for yourself. And we could just admire how cool you are. Everyone thinks that the guy that peels out is cool, right? Maybe in your limited view of the world Josh, but the reasons why people climb are many and how they view and relate their adventures to others, can also run the spectrum of justifications. If everyone whoever told a lie about their climbing quit, well I imagine it would be nice again to go climbing with no one at the crags. Just go read the mags and you will find lies ad nauseum. Many well known climbers to come out of this country have been known for bending the truth to some degree or another regarding their routes. For a fact I know some of the S. Cal climbers that post in here are prevaricators. A few are looked up to as famous, semi-famous, or just well known peeps. In fact one in particular has the nickname of Liar. As a matter of fact I did quit climbing, but then started again, quit, started, etc. It's kinda boring to be mono-dimensional eh. There are way to many other ways to have intense experiences besides climbing. But the cool thing is I always come back to climbing and I do it for reasons personal and not ego driven as your adolescent response infers.

The only lies that matter are the ones you believe yourself- The most destructive one: That climbing isn't that important :!: When in fact its your energy and part of your soul.
