Odd page refresh behaviour

Frequently I view the main page to see the active topics. I'll then click on one, read through it, then use the browser back function (IE 6.0) to return to the main page. Often I now have to do a "hard" refresh (ctrl+refresh) to get the main page to update. I'll then click on another topic link, read it, then return to the main page as usual. However, I will now see the original topic listing, including the original picture that I saw BEFORE doing the "hard" refresh. I have to now refresh again, only to have this odd behaviour continue each time I go to read a topic and then return.

I have not observed this issue on any other discussion forums, or general web sites for that matter. Am I the only one experiencing this?

George.

Might be due to waiting on Apache... I have the # of child processes throttled down pretty low. Our bandwidth has been increasing linearly... maybe it's time to open up the maxclients a bit more.

Doh.

And Tim want's to blame Apache? Two words: caching brain dead. Ok, three.

As I said, not observed anywhere else. Is there something particular then about rc.com that causes brain death in IE?

It will occur elsewhere, you just haven't observed it. IE likes to cache things, and likes to make assumptions about what should be cached and how. We can fix this at our end... we just need to send cache-control headers (for IE), which for some reason we're not doing right now. We should be. It's worth pointing out that Mozilla and other browsers also cache the front page. I said it was brain dead because IE's caching is very buggy and is quite different in implementation from other browsers.

I'll submit a bug report for this. In the meantime, click on the logo as a work around.

I said maybe. As of this instant there are 43 active httpd children. That's twice the average from 6 months ago.

In any event we ought to be sending headers with mod_expires or PHP to blow out these sorts of things. (incidentally I discovered an interesting way to sniff behind proxy caches for a user's real IP... I'll set it up for geotargeting and demographics, plus it's an excellent analysis tool) It doesn't matter to me whether you or I enable it, but it's not like this is particularly difficult...
