No gray areas here!

Which of these classics should we set our sites on sending this weekend.

Here is the tale of the tape:

Black President 5.11a **** (p. 314 Vogel guide)

Some have said a bit soft for the grade, I say an entry level climb into the world of 5.11 Joshua Tree climbing. A little bit of a hike involved, but if one is headed out to say maybe, Bighorn Mating Grotto, it's a great climb to add to the day's ticklist.

White Rastafarian V3 or 5.11+R? *****

The classic Josh high-ball for the grade. A nice big rock, implanted in the ground, directly below the crux, is almost unavoidable in a fall. Done BEFORE bouldering pads were conceieved, it remains a test piece today, not so much for the toughness of the moves, but for the ovaries required to launch onto the face and make the crux move 18-25 feet off the deck.

There you have it.

To summarize for the unitiated:

Rope vs Unrope.
Pads vs Gear.
Slab (? sort of) vs Steep
Trad vs Bouldering.

I would have to say that knocking WR off the ticklist would mean more to me than Black President, just because of the commitment.

Anything that high with the crux at the top deserves my respect. I've heard gruesome stories about it. Break out the cajones and send that s**t.

... although I would love to start breaking into the josh 11s.

Whoa there tiger. Give it some room to breath, eh?
As a legitimate post.

Don't you think that being the first post in my threads and labeling them trolls is being a little antagonistic? Maybe just a little?

What was your last thread? Something like Most Annoying User?

In that sense that every thread hopes to create discussion, could one not sucessfully label all posts, as dingus has so correctly stated, trolls? It's really amatter of subjectivity.

If one doesn't like the poster: troll!
If one doesn't like the topic: troll!
If one thinks the question too easy: troll!

Publically stated: is this the example the number one rated user and an administrater of the site wants to set for proper decorum in the disussion boards? To jump in at every opportunity and label "TROLL" or try to push buttons?

Finished.

Done them both. Did Black President and Caught Inside on a Big Set on the same 100+ degree day. WR is by far the more classic. BTW, I have seen folks fall from the crux--and none that I have seen have hit the rock that was mentioned.

and as far as which one, it comes down to a day of bouldering vs a day of roped climbing

Buy or borrow the climbing video "Friction" and you can see Brandy Mulligan pitch from the crux--safely into the dirt. It would be a scary fall anyway, though.

Normally I wouldn't hesitate to grab the ropes, but WR and something about josh bouldering in particular has a certain appeal.

The thing is, Adam, this isn't necessarily a troll. There is an interesting philosophical question related to trad vs. bouldering perference here--between two highly regarded JT routes.

Similarly, the Coexistence vs. Separate Reality thread had an underlying meaning--which you eventually got and seemed to appreciate.

Pretty funny!

White Rastafarian is a great boulder problem and all, but not much more than 5 minutes of commitment. The crux is fairly low and perfectly safe (and hardly that difficult either) and the top out is pretty easy, so if you pull the crux, there is no way your coing to fall on the top out. Hardly some hair raising adventure. So after you pull the moves, what do you do for the rest of the day?

Black President is a great varied climb and in a cool location too. Not much of a choice really, unless you set your ambition level pretty low; then WR is the obvious choice.

Agreed Curt and Rich, but like I said, "let's be honest"...

Rich also stated that "this thread should be a winner... lot's of views but no bites, since many will not want to appear as a racist."

So what do you think the intent was ??? Sincere question, or TROLL ???

As I said myself, I would consider WR much higher on the ticklist, as it is a harder and unroped highball... Hell, I backed off commiting to the upper rail with that rock below me. On a rope, I'll always finish.

rrradam, it is a question that can ansered in many levels.

possbibly on some that some people do not realize exists.

Realizing that some users are afraid of racial division and responding that some will look but may not post because of the nature of that fear is not trolling. You are free to publically post any of my PM's to you. Can I do the same with yours?

I say put it to a vote period. For the whole of RC.com, that way Philbox did with what's his name. I think you are being myopic, vindictive, spiteful, and sub-consciously want to make me your ______.

I started climbing in 1970, long before this place was created. Climbing will exist with or without this site.

And I am after all: a climber first.

internet addict third.....maybe even fourth. there are so many other really, it's hard to keep a track off. Either way, it's not the top, I assure you....

Like the first and subsequent posters stated, I think I will also go with White Rastafarian

Here's why:

Short approach.
Good end of day action.
Good roped climbs near by.
To recreate the scene at the base of the first ascentionists after the first send, and celebrate the name, and philosophy of the climb.

IRIE!

MON

I will post again on monday and let you know how I fare in the fall!

4 hours round trip? Did you approach from Indian Cove? Methinks you might be exaggeratting a bit.

I'm gonna have to go troll on this one, not enough common ground to be worth comparing. Maybe Hot Rocks -vs- WR, at least they are close together.

How about Double Cross -vs- Sticher Quits? The battle of the 5.7's.

Can't think of too many places in the Park that require a 4 hour round trip, least of all BP (30 - 45 min each way). Otherwise, a good parody. But really, WR is WAY over rated. A veritable choss pile. There must be scores of young gym aspirants that could pull the thing first try; but then again, maybe that's the appeal. [I can see spittle dripping on keyboards]
