Smallest 4 Aliens then BD up from there. Aliens Black [1/3], Blue [3/8], Green [1/2], Yellow [3/4] (and the new inbetween size of Gray) then BD 0.5 purple, 0.75 green, 1 red, 2 yellow, 3 blue I also like Wild Country Zero #3, #4, #5, #6 which correspond to the smallest 4 sizes of Aliens and also Metolius TCU #1 blue, #2 yellow which correspond to Alien Green and Yellow; and #3 orange which duplicates BD 0.5 --David.

aliens and camalots are (imho) complementary. At least they are to me. Aliens up to the red size, camalots from purple (0.5) to #2 or #3, are a good mix. IMHO. Camalots are heavy, but not horribly so until you get to #3 and above. Then, very much so. But for at least the #0.5, #0.75, #1, and #2 sizes, the extra range is an immense advantage.

I'd have to agree with what every one else has said so far. But I don't have much experience with the bigger aliens.

Why choose? In such a wonderfully capitalist society, one need not limit and reduce life to such choices. Use both and enjoy the spoils of the finest protection a trad climber can enjoy.

The bigger aliens are too flexible for their weight. They flop around when you're trying to be precise.

"Why choose?" Indeed. But if you must, I prefer Aliens from blue (or black if you wanna go that small) to Yellow. Then, for me, it's a toss up for a couple of sizes. The next size up in Aliens are red, then orange. I love both of those cams and they work well in nearly every situation. The BD equivalent is the purple .5 and the green .75 -- also two of my favorite cams. Seriously, you'll be happy with either brand in this range. Above that? Give me BD Camelots. Aliens larger than the orange are more narrow than I like, and I have had stability issues with them where a red #1 Camelot fit perfectly. YMMV. Ed

Aliens up to Red and Camalots from there. Black alien is of questionable use, unless you are doing aid climbing.

Check out this website for comparative and more accurate data than some of what has been given about Aliens and Camalots. Jp

Agree with much of the above, especially vegastradguy: aliens are nice to have in the smaller sizes, then go with BD's (off topic, but above #3 I like flex friends). I have a smorgasbord ("Jefe, would you say I have a 'plethora' of cams?") of cams purchased as funds permitted. They all work, differences are small, but if you want to pay a little extra for cams that are a little more flexible go with the aliens. Lots of people swear by 'em, not many swear at 'em. Also, if you have the option, it's always nice to try out an amigo's gear before buying your own. IMHO, given the quality of gear available these days, to a fairly large extent it's a headgame: what gear makes you feel more comfortable?

I have Green and Yellow aliens (doubles in fact). I don't feel comfortable with anything smaller than green for trad climbing. I use .5 - 3.5 Camalots for mid-range. They're slightly heavier than others but make up for it by covering a wider range. Above BD 3.5 I like Wild Country Technical Friends (Number 5). They're lighter, and cover almost as wide a range as BD in those particular sizes. I've considered buying the Number 6 Technical Friend, but I want to test drive a Big Bro before I do.
