I've seen reference to this in descriptions for some of the Fishers. What is it?

Bryan likes to drill holes to slam in his homemade beaks instead of trenching heads in the fishers. What a sinner!

So, what's up with this sandstone 'trenching' technique? I am well versed in the ways of granite but the implications of this sandstone idea scare me...

So far it's really only been used in the Fisher's. It's a Beyer thing- which might be explaination enough! I talked to Khris Kalous about it, specifically concerning his climb of World's End. He told me he made special Aluminum heads that were HUGE. He also said that when you clean them they blow out the pladement , but he thought it wouldn't any good to leave them fixed cause they wouldn't be any good that way either. It seems as if some of the harder routes in the fishers may eventually render themselves unclimbable- well unless you drill.

Andrew,

That's sick!

Hey, when we going fisher trenching anyway?

I'll bet we could just take 16 penny nails - leave the drill at home.

(NOT).

I like that style of adding comments to a route -- we should adopt it, it might save someone an epic here and there.

On second thought, epics are what the best campfire stories are made of

Until someone actually does it...It seems that they were already unclimbable-- well unless you drill. (Trenching is Drilling)

Interesting...

Porter also concluded that trenching was tantemount to bolting.

I have a muddy respect for the Fisher Towers but how is it that 10 or 11 pitches is a grade VI climb (according to the link)???

The subject of trenching seems closely related to the subject of removble bolts. You can drill a shallow hole upwards to hold a bathook or downwards to hold a full stength ball in spoon cam...

Granted, I realize that hardened mud and granite yield slightly different ethical questions (and that you would'nt use an RB in Fishers).

Rock on dudes,
john

have you climbed in the fishers john? as middendorf says, 5 pitches on sandstone feels like 10 on granite. and 5 pitches in the fishers feels like 10 on zion sandstone.

those are also all long pitches. and a quick perusal of super tacos shows reanimator on the column being a grade VI and only 11 pitches. my guess is that it isn't nearly as involved as a route in the fishers like intifada that is very hard, fairly long, and with a long rappelling descent from frightening acnhors.
