Anyone know the deal with john rock, near looking glass? was up there recently and noticed a handfull of bolts. climbing looks great and pretty runout. slabby with a steep headwall at one point. just wondering if anyone knew anything about the routes, access, etc.

I worked for a summer camp near Bravard, NC for a couple of summers and we routinely took the campers to John's Rock as an alternative to the busier Nose area and south face of looking glass. There are some easier 3 and 4 pitch climbs (5.6-5.8) on the side facing Looking Glass. A couple of the lines are runout pretty far but the slabs are featured enough that I felt comfortable guiding the climbs. On the approach to these climbs you scramble up a forth class section (50 ft?) and at the top, climbers right, thrity feet or so you'll find a few toprope anchors that Outward Bounds uses for their courses. Further down the same face as these easy climbs the wall gets steep and there are a multitude of moderate to difficult (hard 5.12?) climbs on mixed bolts and gear. I've taken repeated falls on some of the climbs and others I didn't dare. I don't remember the aspects of these faces but The Climber's Guide to North Carolina listed them if I remember correctly. If you have trouble finding the topos let me know I should able to help some by getting in touch with some old friends I worked with who I've been meaning to look up anyway. Good luck and be safe.

Thanks for the info supercraker. i think i would like some more info on routes if you have access to such a thing. Also, does it get used a lot by summer camps and OB? I also work for a camp in the area and I'm always looking for new alternatives, so I may be interested in taking some trips there this summer. Thanks man.

I'd definitely be interested in some John's Rock topo's. My NC Guide book doesn't include it. I've always wondered about that cliff.

Have you asked at one of the local shops? One of them has topos, possibly the one in Brevard, if I remember correctly.

Are you sure it is Johns and not Cedar Rock? If it is Johns I need to get the wife and go for a hike. Drive past it going to Looking Glass at least once a week. James

John's is the one that's right behind the fish hatchery. Cedar is over behind it, you can see it from routes on the S.Face and S. Wall

right, johns is right at the fish hatchery. you park right there and it's like a mile or two to the rock and it's pretty big. seems worthy of checking out. also there is some pretty decent bouldering there and tons more bouldering to be developed. the boulders are kind of boonish but not as good. the problems that have been developed don't look as good as those that haven't. but it's a really pretty spot and worth it if you're in the area.

In reply to: also there is some pretty decent bouldering there and tons more bouldering to be developed. the boulders are kind of boonish but not as good. the problems that have been developed don't look as good as those that haven't. How do these boulders that you speak of compare to the boulders that are below the North Face of Looking Glass?

I haven't been to those boulders, but from what I've heard, they are probably better. Aren't they mostly hard hard problems? How many boulders would you say are there?

James I called Mike @ Looking Glass Outfitters, he does not have any route info. Said the only person he has seen with it is Adam Fox. I did not know that OB used Johns, I knew they used Cedar Rock. I took a picture of Johns, Sunday if I can find somewhere to host it I will put it up. James

In reply to: Hey naked dude, when are you going to fix that website of yours? Hahaha. Sorry dude. Should be up and running soon. Anyway, I think I'm going to start putting some energy into checking out the routes up there sometime in the next few months if anyone wants to accompany me or if you just want some beta when I get it. Just let me know.

I've been to the boulders several times and they are ok. They are nothing like Boone or Rumbing Bald but they are ok when it's too hot to go to Rumbing Bald. I kinda have a topo for the boulders at John's Rock. It's not a good topo but it gets me around. I can show anybody the area if you want.
