Chalk first aid

I was bored and thinking about a habit of mine and wondering if I was the only one...

I love climbing cracks, whether jamming or liebacking. As we all know, unless you're climbing and beautifully smooth rock, these sends usually come at quite a cost to your hands. While mostly it is just scrapes, every once in a while I tear a chunk out of one of my knuckles when I fall. These tend to bleed quite a bit. To stop the bleeding, I just grab some chalk and rub it into the cut. Later, at home, I can clean it properly, but as a quick fix, it's great. Anyone else do this?

Interesting...I took a trapeze class (what a blast!) last summer, and when I accidentally drew some blood, one of the instructors suggested I do the same thing--rub some chalk into it to staunch the bleeding. I didn't try it, but seems you're not the only one out there doing it.

 Yeah, I do it all the time to staunch to flow from minor bleeders. If nothing else, at least it absorbs the blood that's already come out of the wound so it doesn't get all over your clothes and the rock.

Plain old chalk is the same as Tums; safe to be taken internally.
Hence the billiards psyche-out trick of eating the chalk . . . or the crazy teacher

My only concern would be extra calcium in the blood
(may be a good thing? Aren't beta-blockers calcium-based?)

Now, if the companies soup up the chalk somehow, say with mercury or other metals (which I have heard to be the case with billiard-hall hand chalk &/or stick chalk in the past) then that's a different story.

I say, stanch away!

Chalk is an analgesic (lessens pain)

So, It's great for cuts for 2 reasons.

1)pain relief
2)stopping blood flow

Dude, I've been doing this for years. Chalk heals all injuries. This list includes, but is not limited to; Minor cuts, major cuts, flappers, broken tib, cancer, gardia... You get the idea.

Yes, chalk is edible. In fact, it works very well for upset stomachs, etc. get out a bottle of Pepto-Bismol and look at the active ingrediant: Magnesium Carbonate. Chalk is just pure magnesium carbonate, so it is just like Peto Bismol without the flovoring and coloring. (Remember- this is just plain old regular chalk. Don't eat Metolius SuperChalk or any other chalk with aditives).

Why the concern, especially since there is NO calcium in climbing chalk? Tums and climbing chalk are most certainly NOT the same thing.

Magnesium Carbonate has antiseptic (not analgesic) properties and is commonly used as a laxative. You use to be able to buy it in block form at pharmacies. (not sure if this is still the case)

I always use chalk to stop the bleeding on minor cuts from crack climbing. Works like a charm.
