does anyone climb with this on ? Outdoors or in the gym ? I know it's not such a safe thing to be doing, but sometimes no music = no life and sometimes the "boost" just isn't there....

No "Mini-disc" but I've been thinking of getting an MP3 player for the gym... I'm tired of all the techno-crap they keep playing. As for outdoors, I might use one at the local junk sport climbing crag but probably not anywhere else... Music piped into my head would totally screw the atmosphere and ambiance of the beautiful places... Part of the reason I like those places. duskerhu

but if u put on music u can't hear your belayer shouting... a reply or a warning... i'd put headphones on so i can slip em off if i need any help of spotting from the belayer. But then again.. i don't know if i should take my player up with we or not... bouldering is ok.. i can crash on the pad... safely... + there's no need for outside interference

There's this girl at a gym I frequent who always boulders with a discman strapped to her hip. I definitely wouldn't reccomend it for anything other than bouldering though...and not even for bouldering unless you are just doing some easy traverses.

Only when I'm on the tread wall. Drowns everything else out and you can time your workouts by the music. M

I wanna get an MP3 player so that when I'm at the gym and am bouldering: 1) I don't have to listen to the sometimes painful music my gym likes to play 2) I can pretend I don't hear someone say hi if I don't want to talk to them But I wouldn't wear it outside, because when I'm outside I enjoy the sounds of nature, and communicating with a partner is key. Nor would I wear it inside toproping for the second reason as well. K.

I always wear mine when I'm soloing ice, or alpine climbing. I just have the headphones hanging off of my shoulder straps on my pack. The music seems to give me that extra boost of motivation to keep moving fast...

I also wear an MP3 player when soloing ice. I also wear it in on those painful occasions when I'm in the gym so I don't have to listen to the socializing and inane crap that goes on. It's amazing to climb ice with and has become as important to my soloing as my tools.

I, too, solo routinely with a minidisc. For slogging and approaches it is the ticket. Seems funny, but it blends in more on ice and alpine than rock climbing. I do wear it for that too, but it seems to take a bit more abuse. Like getting like 7 Cds on one disc and charging. Cheers

Most of the times the aproach to our routes are minimal, so the car comes with us all the way. I just turn it up.

I have been bounce this idea for my solo escapeds myself to help me keep my head free of junk thoughs. It really helps on long car rides so I figure when I am out raping & tapping or going solo it would be great.

In reply to: I think I fall too much to climb with an mp3 player. :? get the kind with an arm band and throw it on your bicep... or get a small mp3 player and clip it inside your front wasteband while bouldering, then just tuck the chord under your shirt, behind your back, or both. I have to agree with what was said earlier though, anything over bouldering or gyms it is advisable not to add any more distractions to your senses. Being able to communicate with your belayer and to take in your surroundings far outweighs the importance of your personal preference of musical enjoyment.

Never have on technical routes..however for mountaineering it can be nice...Although sometimes I don't like it because i can miss listening to the snowpack...if the snowpack is transmittiing soundwaves and other vibrations it's a clue that it might transmit a fracture ...

my mp3 had a run in with a big rock while climbing. needless to say the rock won and now the screen is cracked and blacked out with ink. It still works though you just have to know what buttons to push. I haven't learned my lesson and still take it bouldering all the time. climbing without music is like a hotdog without a bun you can eat it but it isn't the same

is it me or does using a MP3 player or a portable CD player defeat the purpose of climbing? I climb because its fun and i like to get away from the mainstream. even when im in a gym and they're playing thier techno (which they do to often) or some bad music i just ignore it. i can tolerate it for the time im not climbing simply because im foucusing on my next problem or one im working on. if you really work hard and your about to send a 5.12 it shouldnt make a diffrence to what music is playing, be it pink floyd or celine deion. also, as a climber, i have bought all of my own equiptment which has left me straped for cash and if it came down to a 150 dollar MP3 player or a new rope, shoes, or crash pad i would be hard pressed to buy the MP3. The only kids i see rocking those are kids whose parents fund thier weekend excursions to the indoor gym. thanks for listening to me rant

I climb with an mp3 player that has headphones coming off a cord around my neck so it stays in close, i use it to cut out other distractions... i can think quicker and more logically with music on so i use it when doing maths or climbing... but thats just me. but hell i wouldnt spend the $200 on it either... we won it free so i use it... not all kids who climb at gyms are there coz they want to either remember that. I'm there coz i have no other choice but i need to climb.

I have listened to my mini disc player in the gym from time to time, while bouldering, but I still am trying to get over the fact that I cant communicate well with my belayer. Part of the climb is just chating with my partner and listenening to him tell me he wont lower me unless i send it. Outdoors I feel that music would be nice, but, part of being out side is listening to nature, and the natural suroundings. Then again, when I ski I am always pumped up when a sweet song comes on and my friends and I ski the sickest line we can find :) Also, if your interested in mini disc, stay away from them. Unless you dont mind lower music quality, and horrible software, then go for it. The best feture is the massive battery life, but it still doesnt suit my needs. Software is very slow as well.

I don't even have one. If I did have one, I wouldn't use it much at all. Especially not while climbing. It's just not me. I've never been too into music like just about everyone else I know, and I climb to climb. Music would be a distraction. :? Besides, when I need music, I sing my own songs. ;) I do love singing.
