Hello there. I will start soon as a student at York university. I hope I ll have time to go climbing regularly. Could somebody provide me some information about climbing halls in Toronto? Is there one close to York university?

Joe Rockheads and Rock Oasis are both pretty much downtown. Oasis is much cheaper.

There's also TCA and several small gyms such as the new gym in Scarborough and the Rock in Mississauga.

The Pad http://www.thepadclimbing.com/ is closest to York U, being in the hwy 7 and 400 area. They specialize in bouldering with top out pods. There are also a dozen or so 20 odd foot high top rope routes.

Oasis doesn't charge you $25 for a lead test.

The pad does look pretty cool for those times I am up there on business an can't get anyone to go climbing with me. But having been to both Joe Rockheads and Oasis, I choose the Oasis better emphisis or attempts for outdoor mimicking routes. 1 route per wall space, i.e. no looking for tape. That is what I like......

Thanks for your advice. Oasis and Rockheads are quite far away to go regularly, especially without car. So I ll try this Pad Climbing, as it seems to be really close to York University.

Yeah
What is the deal with the Rock is it a gym or a health club... Or both. Can you go there for just a day climb or do you have to be a member.

yeah, oasis and joe rockheads are the two popular ones... i guess rockheads is more expensive when you factor in lead test cost.
TCA - toronto climbing academy is in the east end of the city, it's a cool gym with sustained routes, but wow they never wash their holds. maybe i thought it was sustained because it was so slippery?
The Pad - amazing bouldering! routes are well marked, good variety across styles and grades. Go there.
I've heard about other gyms, one in scarborough, etc... don't know anything about them, have never been there.

try Climb Toronto located at 65 hymus rd. wich is warden and eglinton quarter mile north of the warden subway.
30 ropes 30 routes 30 feet high.

Don't even think about climbing at The Rock. It's dead vertical, and were to lazy to build a plywood structure, so instead they used drop-in anchors all over the place on a brick wall. It's also quite expensive (same as a day pass at a real gym) just to climb a few walls.
It's mainly there to keep kids occupied.
I have climbed at all the toronto gyms. I highly reccomend Oasis and the Pad. Both have amazingly friendly staff and Oasis is close enough to you that you could bike there in the summer or just transit it. The pad is usually fairly quiet - no need to wait for problems. I have no problems climbing at a place that has limited leading, but a ton of bouldering.

I would think Patrick already find a gym since november, but still like to throw in my 2 penny... the Pad is really cool and closest to York Univ. On a good day, you can bike there. The bouldering island is really cool, no need for partners and there's a bunch of friendly staffs and climbers there, I like also the shower after the work out... the Cedar Climb in Scarborough is small, and the cave upstair is .... well... you have to see it, they are not bad, but it will be over 30km if you want to bike there. Have fun

I'm not sure exactl where York university is, or whether or not your only interested in indoor climbing, but dont forget that you're smack dab in the middle of jsut about anywhere on the niagara escarpment. When it warms up, if you need a ride, let me know. I head up there alot, and could probably swing by and get ya if you dont have anyone else to climb with.
