Me and a friend wan't to do some camping this summer but don't want to go to a campground with a million people.
I want to find a place that I can park the car, hike into the woods and stay
there for a couple of days.
I live in maine, so there must be many places but searches just come up with established pay campgrounds.
anyone know how to find a spot like this, that is legal to stay at?
thanks,
zero

some parks, have backcountry permits you can get.. you might want to check with your park services and see they will or do those.. then you can hike way off into the middle o nowhere and camp

I think as long as it's National Forest you can camp anywhere that's more than 200 yd's from the road. Parking may be an issue, finding a place you can leave your car.

I'm not familiar with the East but over here in the West there's lots of National Forest with free backcountry camping.

Just don't get lost. :)

Pretty much any state park allows camping where you want, except in parks where camping is provided. Comman sense does rule in this situation also, like minimal impact practices. I beleive pretty much any where along the Appilacia Trail is fair game, once again its a good idea to camp at provided sites if they are available. Some state parks have Natural camp sites in teh middle of nowhere that you have to reserve. You rbest bet is to check with ur states forestry websites

Get a road map and look near you for a wilderness area or national forest. Look up the regulations for said area.
