...do you compete against another climber or rival?...or do you compete against yourself and the problem or route? What is your mindset going into a comp?

I think the competition is always against yourself.
The mind game is the biggest problem for most climbers, so until that is overcome, the biggest part of the comp. is against yourself.

I agree with greg. You just won't be climbing your best when you're nervous/scared. Happens to all of us. However, once youre over that, compete with who or whatever. I prefer a friend that I know is right around my skill level.

I always try to climb harder than the guy I'm with, it gives me motivation and makes me climb harder and better. However, the real competition is against myself. I just always feel like I should do better than the day before...so I force myself to.

It depends on the comp. If CHris Sharma was there, I would compete against the wall, but if someone you are pretty close to beating is there, then watch your competitors

I don't really care what I place at a comp. I find that in the competition enviornment i climb my best, so it's a way for me to see how strong I am. Placing high is always a plus though. =)

Madriver: I suggest only competing against other climbers who share your last name...lol

In my son's case, he is competing (1) to win prizes; (2) to get the respect of other climbers. Who else is climbing is not really an issue.

Against myself. I usually climb better in comps, so I expect to see improvements.

But honestly, anymore I just enjoy being at the comp and climbing. Bagging as many problems as I can given a limited time, and trying to get the most difficult ones without wasting too much time. It's a fun environment, and I've met a lot of people at comps.
