Stick with Tahoe, Needles will be brutally hot that time of year.

*Stick with Tahoe, Needles will be brutally hot that time of year.* Uh...The Needles, located at 8000' in Sequoia Nat Forest, are in perfect condition that time of year, really that's the only time of year you can go there. The town of Needles, CA, located near the Cali-AZ border in the Mojave desert, will indeed be brutally hot then...but then, since there's no climbing there that I know of, that should'nt be too much of a problem.

There is no better time of year to hit the Needles. Perhaps someone wants the place to themselves.

that's the season for needles...the leap was hotter for me last summer. however the place had definitely gotten more crowded over the years...i think drkdos is on to something. so yeah, go to the leap...it will be much nicer there! take a mountain bike if you decide against our urges and go to the needles anyway.

I work construction in Palm Springs. It gets to 125 degrees in the summer. That's at 300' above sea level. The Needles are at 8,000' and most of the oft done routes are east and west facing so you can chase the shade easily. It rarely gets above 85 deg there. Bonus points: Climb the South Face of the Warlock in July and tell me how you liked that first pitch! TRADitionally yours, Cali Dirtbag

Climb some stuff on the Wizard, Magician east face, Sorceror's Apprentice, or Necromancer, you'll never see a soul :-)

The Needles suck and the ratings are soft. Plus the hike is brutal, the weather blows, bears are starting to show up but there's no bear boxes in place which means your car will get busted up. And definitely stay away in August, it's just too darn hot and there's usually a fire. Lover's Leap is much better that time of year.

I have been caught in a hail/snow storm in August! Bring a jacket, bring your best trad skills. Have fun.
