Just Bought A Rope From A Friend. How To Measure Length?

Hi. I did a search on this issue, but nothing came up and when it did, it was a bunch of key word spamming results.

Anyway. I bought a brand spankin' new Maxim rope from a friend who bought it from the local gym we usually climb at. I want to know if it is 50m or 60m, but I have not thought of a good way to measure accurately. Does anyone have any ideas?

I contacted Maxim with what little info I have (I don't know the diameter or length or model #), but I have nto yet recieved a response.

I want to start climbing outdoors again and I want to lead The Fifth of July in Clear Creek, but that route is nearly 100 ft long and a 50m rope simply won't cut it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

in case you don't have a 50 meter tape measure...

use a standard 25 foot tape measure to place two lamps (chairs, rocks, whatever) 25 feet apart in a hallway. wrap the rope around these two lamps, counting the number of times you pace the 25 foot span. 25x6.5=50m, 25x8=60m. roughly.

Have you actually thought about this question? :)

At all?? :) :)

A) Use a tape measure.

B) No tape measure? Then generally . . . fingertip to fingertip (arms horizontal) is the same length as your height. Count "arm lengths".

C) No arms? Then most adult male tennis shoes are about a foot long. Go heel to toe and count off a distance then lay the rope out.

D) No feet? Then check out your kitchen floor. Is it made of 12 inch x 12 inch tiles? Use them as a measuring device. Not 12 inch x 12 inch? Guesstimate its size and adjust accordingly.

E) Go back to the local gym and see if they have another rope thats the same color/diameter/brand and see what the tag says.

I can hear it now...

Dear Maxim,

I have one of your ropes but I don't know anything about it other than it's made of nylon and [insert]. Could you please tell me how long it is?

Thanks!

form it into a circle. measure the diameter, and multiply this by 3.141592653589. this is the length of your rope.

a 60m tape measure? LOL. Yeah I just happen to have one right next to my 10m ruler.

The 25 ft tape measure idea is a decent idea. I will try it.

Why don't you just find someone with a rope and compare them?

Cut a 1 meter section off and measure its weight. Then you measure the weight of the entire rope coil. Divide the weight of the entire rope by the 1m section and you get the length of the original rope less 1m.

I'm sure that by this time that that email has been copied and distributed all over Maxim's headquarters. Probably the most fun they've had at Maxim in a long time.

you will need: a stopwatch, a harness, a solid anchor atop a cliff >70m high.

put on harness. tie in to rope. attach rope to anchor. start stopwatch and jump off cliff. stop stopwatch at bottom of fall. you have fallen a distance approximately 4.9 times the square of the fall time. divide by 1.06 to adjust for (approx) rope stretch and you have the length of the rope.

as a bonus you have tested the rope under "real conditions" and have checked that you can build a bomber anchor. You are almost a climber already!

Luke

Disclaimer: if you do this you are an idiot. how about doubling the rope over three times (so you have 8 equal strands) and then measuring that length and multiplying by 8?

I think it should be at leeeeast 100m high then.. to further his quest to be a well rounded climber either a) prussik back up the rope(if he brought his prussiks) b) cut himself free and solo the route c) be humbled by explaining to the SARS guys WHY he is 30-40m(dunno yet right) off the ground at the end of his rope.

also adjust stopwatch results if any ledges are hit.. or for more accurate results.. try again

Jay.. that was great..

Thanks for the tip! I did this with my current lead rope.
My lead rope is 9.2 mm in diameter. 9.2 mm times 3.141592653589 equals 265.9 mm*.

Pretty short rope. No wonder it takes me so long to do any big walls!

The only thing I don't understand is: Why do I form the rope into a circle again?

If it is indeed brand new, there will be a tape on each end. This should state the length along with the manufacturer and CE lab code. Oh, and BTW if that tape doesn't have a 1 in a circle, it's not a lead rope - don't lead on it.

And next time - don't buy a 3rd hand rope.

Shutup I bought a new rope. Jesus. I was there when he bought it and he hasn't climbed with it EVER or I would have been there.

The measurement I came up with is between 50 and 60m as I expected. I tried using a mega tape measure and it was the most accurate. Putting the rope at 186 feet.

So, I still don't know how long this rope is and the tapes at the end have nothing but CE lab codes, some EN code, and a circle with a 1 in it.

sounds to me like you do know how long it is - 186 feet. I would guess that this is then a 50m rope not a 60m, just because a manufacturer would be more likely to make it a bit longer than a bit shorter. I do remember reading somewhere about a manufacturer that makes their ropes a bit longer than the listed length (maybe it was something about shrinkage, but I dont recall what. someone else might), I also dont remember what manufacturer it was and I dont know if it is true. However, now that you have measured it you know not to use it to rap off anything more than 93 ft high. Perhaps you should say 90ft or even 85 if you arent so sure of your measurements. It isalso worth saying that guidebooks are not necessarily accurate on how high a pitch is, so it is best to err on the side of caution and assume you should use this rope on pitches that are listed as taking a 50m.

that wasnt so hard was it?

Mammut ropes are 2.5% longer than indicated when cut at the factory. Ropes will shrink over time.

Pretty standard length.
