Alergic to NSAIDS (Asperin, Advil)

I am severly alergic to NSAIDS (anaphylatic) I carry an epi-pen and all the stuff that goes with it. Lucky for me NSAIDS are typically something you have to ingest, and have only done this once by accident (sending me to the hospital). My problem is on the weekend I stressed a series of shoulder muscles on a relativly easy climb and don't know if there is anything I can take to help, usually I would take Advil but that is how I found out I was alergic.

Typically I would take three or four days off and rest up but I think this is going to take a little longer.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks
T

I actually just went to the pharmacy yesterday looking for an over the counter NSAID since I can't take ibuprofin or aspirin anymore... The guy at the counter told me that unless I can take Aleve, my next step would be something prescription.

I asked about any kind of supplement that contained cortizone (obviously steroidal) and he said that that would only be available via prescription.

I do take glucosamine for my knees, and that really helps. But glucosamine is for bones/joints. If your stress is muscular, and all you need is a pain killer, try tylenol.

If your insurance covers Rx... then go to the doc and see what your options are.

Hope I was able to help.

Tylenol won't do anything for the inflammation but will help with pain. Heroin might too (ha). Seriously, I would use gentle heat about 3-4 times a day for 10 minutes each time.

Aleve is the stuff, yo! Just be careful because your body will build up a tolerance to it and it will stop working. I used it after I got my Tylenol II yanked away from me after becoming accidentally addicted to it. I had to cut the Tylenol II pills in half so that I wasn't high during class, but I still became dependent on it and suffered withdraw symptoms when they took it away. It was for my own good, but I hated it because nothing killed the pain like one of those little white pills! Of course, Aleve will not do much for your inflamation, but there are non-drug ways to solve that mentioned above.

Note: FOOD and WATER are musts when taking Naproxen Sodium. (Aleve) Your liver will thank you.

Dude Aleve is a NSAID's it would be hospital time for me right after I jab the Epi pen in my leg. While it looks like a good product it is out for me.

if you cant get hold of any steroidally based anti inflammatory drugs, then i would suggest hot and cold compresses alternately on affected muscle for 5-10 minutes each 3-4 times, followed by a willing parnter massaging it!

AYE!
:P :P
never wise to become reliant on steroidal anti inflammatories as they have quite wide ranging effects apart from the anti inflammatory effect, depressed immune system, hormonal effect ( can cause cushings (hyperadrenocoriticism) iatrogenically), polydipsia, polyuria, polyphagia, muscle breakdown, skin problems etc. etc. list is very long and not many of them are nice.

could always try alternative medicine, not that i know anything about that strand of medicine!

there are several enzyme supplements on the market that can be taken to reduce imflamation. Cant remember what the one I took was called. They are digestive enzymes that when taken on an empty stomach reduce swelling.
Seemed to help alot with my hip flexor overuse injury

Talk to your doc, you may be able to try the next generations stuff either Celebrex or Bextra, both work great for inflamation as well as pain. I used it when I tweaked my shuolder and it was a godsend....

Are you allergic to ALL NSAIDS? Alleve is Naproxen Sodium, in a different chemical family than ibuprofin. You may want to check into it. That stuff is like turbo aspirin. Gives me BAD heartburn and indigestion if I take it for any length of time (like, more than a day or two). But it really really rules.

Do you know what about the NSAID you are allergic to? like andypro said aleve is not the same as ibuprofrin(sp). not all ibuprofrins are the same , advil is not the same as safeway brand ibuprofrin which is not the same as rite aid brand..etc etc.

stuff like celebrex, and all the RA drugs are going to target joint inflamation and likely won't do any good for muscle pain.

however, i question the need for antiinflamatories in the original posters situation. soreness does not always mean something is wrong, when the muscles breakdown and rebuild themselves, you get sore, and by taking antiimflam, you can inhibit the process and can make things worse.

this is a hot topic in muscle physiology and you can find research supporting both sides

i would just take it easy, and do the ice/heat routine, and if something hurts don't do it.

If you have a reaction to all NSAIDs, try tylenol. Otherwise see your doctor 'cause those and aspirin are your only non-prescription choices (though aspirin is a COX-2 inhibitor like the NSAIDs, so it's possible that you may get a reaction to that too).

Naproxen Sodium (Aleve) and bananas.

Banana twice a day during stressing times will save you. I almost never have soreness after climbing because of the potassium benefits of the wonderful, yellow banana.

Ive heard that taking large Doses of Ester-C can help with inflamation. Does soemthing with the way joints lubricate, they are not sure how but for some ppl it works. Just be carefull with any :Natural: drugs you might try they have not been tetsed and can have the same interactions/reactions as NSAID's due to the action and chemical make up as an NSAID. APAP/ Tylenol is about ur only option or you can bte the bullet and go to your MD and see what you can get Rx.

All NSAID's are out for you!!! There is ALWAYS a possibility of cross sensitivity with in the same drug class. This includes the new generation NSAID's called COX II Inhibitors. This includes Vioxx and Celebrex. You are describing a severe anaphyllatic reaction, you never want to risk a second. The reaction gets more severe, faster onset and more difficult to treat.

Tylenol is the only safe over the counter pain killer for you. I don't know about alternative meds (herbal).

Being in Canada you might be able to get Tylenol 1's over the counter, this contains a small amount of codiene if your pain is that bad.

See your family doc to get a physio referal. TENS is a transdermal devise that is good for deep muscle and tendonous pain. This coupled with range of motion physio and other tricks they have up their sleeve is probably the fastest way back onto rock.

So far my experiance with NSAIDs has been that all of them have caused a major reaction, unfortunatly testing is trial and error. I have been to alergy specialists in Toronto and Chicago in the last four years since this developed and all they say is it is a reasonably common alergy.

On the recovery side I took Robaxacet (over the counter) it seemed to ease the pain and allowed me to sleep aiding in the recovery I feel better today, but still a little sore. I might go to the indoor gym to limber up and do some easy routes.

tc, from all the posts contained herein and my own experience, I think you should take the non-medicated path. Massage, alternating hot/cold compresses and gentle stretching will work wonders for you. Start loading up on protien, too.
