The ACCess Committee's Annual Earthday Crag Cleanup
Yes folks spring is here. It's time to change the crampons for sticky rubber and get back on rock again. As usual at this time of year the ACCess Committee is holding a crag cleanup and this year we will be focusing our attention on the Rattlesnake Point Conservation Area at Bottleglass crag. This also gives us the option of expanding our efforts to Buffalo crag if attendance and time permit. Once again Conservation Halton is waiving entry fees from 9am to 10am for anyone helping with the cleanup.
Last year we held two cleanups for two different Conservation areas and both were highly successful. These cleanups are just one way climbers can give back to the environment and help the ACCess Committee maintain good relationships with the land managers.
Recently climbers have been taking some bad publicity that may very well have a negative impact on access. It is therefore important to attend this cleanup and try to drag by hook or by crook all your belay slaves with you. Not only can you do your bit for the cleanup but members of the ACCess Committee in attendance will be able to answer questions. There are changes coming across the region that may very well affect you, and to maintain access climbers need to work together. Events such as these are a good start to that purpose.
Please take the time to set the morning aside and attend the cleanup and afterwards have your climbing gear with you for some climbing at either Bottleglass or Buffalo. I hope to see many familiar faces on the day and would love to see many new faces. I'm not promising anything at this time but will try to provide some goodies of some sort for those attending.

Garbage bags and disposal service will be provided by Conservation Halton so wear your old clothes and bring gloves if you have some. I also wanted to add that even if you can't make it please tell others about it. There are quite a few climbers on this site from Ontario so plese come up to me during the day and identify yourselves as RC.com'ers.

Access Committee Annual Earthday Cleanup Reviewed.
On Sunday 21st April 2002 a group of approximately 35 rock climbers gathered at Rattlesnake Point Conservation Area for something that has become an annual event. The Access Committee is an organisation established by The Alpine Club of Canada as an intermediary between climbers and land managers such as Conservation Authorities. The Access committee organises its clean ups as a way for climbers and interested individuals to give back to the environment they enjoy and respect. Sites selected are often below or around popular lookout points and often some of the items recovered date back many years even from prior to lands having become Conservation areas. Last years locations included Mount Nemo Conservation Area and Tiffany Falls Conservation Area while this Earthdays clean up covered both the sections of cliffline known as Buffalo Crag and Bottleglass Crag.
The Access Committee works closely with Conservation Halton and the Hamilton Conservation Authority because of their proximity to high population centers and the clean ups are endorsed by the conservation authorities. Further support comes from national organizations such as the Alpine Club of Canada and the Earthroots organization. Also at this years Earthday clean up was a member of the University of Guelphs Clifface Ecology Research Group, climbers coming from across Ontario, and as far away as Michigan.
The Access Committee would like to thank Conservation Halton for covering the cost of admission to participants, provision of garbage bags, and disposal of the recovered waste. Refreshments were provided by individuals on the Access Committee. Gloves were supplied courtesy of Burlington Technologies Centennial Division and in keeping with Earthday themes, were subsequently returned for recycling.
This years Earthday clean up was deemed to be another success with much garbage recovered ranging from discarded automobile parts, to picnic tables and a lot of broken glass. Thanks go out to all participants and others who helped promote the event and make it possible.
