buon giorno. anyone know climbing terms in italian? "alpinista" is the closest to rockclimber, i found out tonight, but think that's more like alpine or mountaineering. is "alpinista della roccia" more accurate? "ascensione della roccia" or "salera della roccia" for rock climbing? plan to roam and climb in sardinia and mainland italy. saw a list for spanish terms a while ago. great if someone can translate a similar list in italian, like: ON BELAY = ? BELAY ON = CLIMBING = CLIMB ON = SLACK = TENSION = TAKE = LOWERING = ON RAPPEL = RAPPEL OFF = BOLT = HANGER = SHUTS = COLD SHUTS = CHAINS = ANCHOR = QUICKDRAW = STATIC ROPE = CORDELETTE = CAMS = HEXES = NUTS = NUT TOOL = BELAYER = BOULDER = TOP ROPE = LEAD = SPORT LEAD = TRAD LEAD = CARABINER = CHALK = ROCK GYM = RED POINT = ONSIGHT = CHIMNEY = ROCKCLIMBING SHOES = SMEARING = CRIMPING = SLOPER = SIDEPULL = LIEBACK = STEMMING = DROP KNEE = HEEL HOOK = MANTLE = DYNO = HAND JAM = OFF-WIDTH = CRACK = CRUX = HAND DOG = RATING = POCKET = DIHEDRAL= ARETE = FLAKE = CORNER = OVERHANG = ROOF = RIDGE = HARNESS = CLIP IN = SLING = SPOT = CRASH PADS = please feel free to add to the list. any help would be appreciated. grazie

LEAD is TIRO only in the sense of pitch = ("The first lead is the hardest") LEAD in the sense of verb is "andare da primo" (to go first) OFF BELAY (leader arrives at belay) = MOLLA TUTTO literally "let go of everything" when taking a climbing class in Italy the instructors had to keep telling the students (2 pitches up) "that doesn't mean you untie from the anchors -- it just means take the rope out of your belay device..." :-) BELAY OFF (second to leader) = LIBERA literally "free" ie the rope is free to be pulled up. If anyone is interested in climbing in NW Italy Mon, Tue or Wed of next week PM me... (English or Italian speaking OK) BTW "Rope team" = CORDATA Dave

grazie molto, tutto the first few i listed are basic commands used here in the U.S., exchanged between climber and belayer to confirm that the belay is on and it's ok to climb, and those exchanged on the way up and after topping out. figured helpful to get those straight  i'm taking an italian class right now, and do have a few translator links bookmarked. but never know if the literal translations are what actually used in climbing. thanks for filling out my list, and the Kong link especially. lots of terms to go over there, whoa by the way, i've asked this before. does anyone know if there's developed climbing on Isola Caprera? it's not listed in the RDB on here. it's an island off of Sardinia, i believe. beautiful rock on the beach, i saw in a photo, with Meditteranean blue all around un arrampicatore i am then, cool. had my instructor Maria scratching her head for a long while last eve during class. got a handout covering Sardegna. looking forward to seeing the island and the country, the mingling and the climbing :D ciao
