Photo Challenge #1 Break the Rules.

I thought something to spice up this from, and force some creativity was in order, so here is what I came up with.

Every once in a while (since we climbers never stick to a shchedule) somone will post a topic with a photo challenge theme. Since not eveyone here has the chance to go and photograph all the time, you can find a photo that fits the theme from your collection, or go out and shoot with the theme in mind. Post your photo and a description of why it fits the theme, and what you like about it. This will be mostly for exhibition, and not really to see who took the best photo for the theme, it is just to get people to think outside the box. And of course all photos submitted will be open for critque.

First theme: Break the Rules.
Any photogrphic or climbing rule: eg , rule of thirds, showing the face in the photograph... .On the other extreme: climbing a building or other such structure that is not generally considered something to climb on.

I realize this theme is very difficult, I want to see some creativity.

Breaking the rules, aaah, my favorite theme :D

As a start:

I like this picture because of the lines/geometry. Breaking the rules because it's a no-rock-climbing picture and it's a butt shot...

Everyone that I show this to either loves it or loathes it. That must be good, right?

I like it because there is no real subject, therefore detail that would normally be superfluous becomes the subject and the unfocused colors have an interesting visual impact.

I think this is my best rule breaker. It's centered, it's got a completely boring subject, and you can't hardly make out most of the picture, yet somehow it's a seriously cool pic to look at.

popol, that's really good! It's more like taking advantage of a usually-lame perspective than a butt shot per se.

I'm a nerd and don't break rules too often. This is about as funky as I get:

I have a series of just this climber's shadow. I purposely did not shoot the climber himself cos the shadows were more interesting to me than the usual sport bunny positions, and with the hard light out, he was under some hideously bright conditions anyway. And although you can't see it in any of the photos I took, he is on a rope. The butt-blob is his chalkbag.

The lighting is weird (it was awful that day) and it's the top of his head, which I normally find to be a pic killer, but somehow this is pleasing to my eye graphically. Personally, I also like this pic cos even though you can't see his face, if you know Jay, you know it's him by the thick glasses keepers he always wears.

I don't really live any more on the edge than that though ;)

Hey Biff, et Al.

Should this Challege be Photo only, or can it be a ColdClimb-esque Photoshopping project?

Nevermind, I guess that could be project #2 ;)

I was trying for a low light blur study. I like it , but there might be too much going on for some people.

OMG.. this climb was sooooo much fun though. Super big Iron cross to feet completly detached while matching hands on a ledge way out right. Really bad sloping landing too.....
