Has anyone seen that commercial with the guy who's rock climbing in some desert, and its for the Marines? I know this is really vague, but does anybody know what I am talking about, and where that might be?

yup, i know exactly what your talking about. I'm pretty sure they are located in between TV shows on most channels, possibly any time of the day. Hope that helps.

I'm skeptical that most of it isn't CG. Who knows though.

I have seen that. It seem likely that the climb is in a studio somewhere. I am not sure how you rate that.

You kidding? It was a lot of CGI, but the climber was real. I know, I was the model. I had them lower a camera from the top, and follow me up on steady-cam. The CGI parts came in when they remorphed my body to make me less studly and give me a shorter haircut, but the no-rope thing was totally real. I gave a little grimace and nearly freaked when my hand broke that hold 400' up, but remembered the camera was there and kept my composure. Anyone who free-solos that chossy pile doesn't have to go through boot, and gets an automatic promotion to Lance Corporal (E4) on enlisting, or so I was told.

I felt a little wierd doing something like this for a rival service (I'm an Army man, myself), but the pay was right, and heck, I just believe in what Bush, Cheney, and Rumsfeld are sending us out to do.

(If you miss the tongue-in-cheek, just keep it to yourself, please.)

Not a bad commercial, as they go, though. Beats the local carpet salesmen for watchability, if not reality. And probably appeals to their target demographic, too. That's not really all that bad a thing.

I have a couple of climbing-related ads on there right now, including the Marines one. I have more to post if people are interested.

The actual place that is visible in the background is Monument Valley in northern arizona's navajo reservation. The rock itself is probably somewhere else, climbing isn't allowed in the Monument Valley area. Unless you pay beaucoup bucks. M

I love these "adventure" ads they love to do for military recruitment. I also remember one where a dude is summiting some mountain peak, and then the one where the kid jumps off a waterfall. I must say, what a f'in crock. Maybe in like 10 years of military service, you get to do some actual rock climbing training for a couple days. Are we really supposed to believe that battles are waged on mountaintops and cliff faces? How dumb do they think our youth is? (wait, don't answer that...)

This Marines ad is not so bad though, because it emphasizes the figurative aspect of the situation, as opposed to actually implying that it's real, or at all related to military service...

I started rockclimbing because of the marines. I went to the Korean Mtn Warfare school in 1977. We learned to rappel and we climbed on a wooden wall. Most of the climbing we did was really easy 4th class. It is really only a special forces thing but it's the same as showing jets for an airforce ad, not many airmen get to fly em. M

Illimaniman,

Have you managed to find the commercial (I think it was for VISA) of the two guys hanging in the portaledge listing off the sports that are too risky for them (like surfing  )?

I bouldered with Grady, a Marine climbing instructor at Santee. You have to lead a 5.9 trad in COMBAT BOOTS to qualify. The marines also climb lots of buildings and the rotten beach cliffs at Camp Pendelton. The beach cliffs are so rotten that protection is not possible. He trains about 250-300 marines a year.
