Has anyone heard of this kid from California, her name is Cerkada Jernik (not sure on the spelling). Apparently she is (8) years old and boulders (V7)! I read a little article about her on the Camp4 website. I'm not sure this is for real or a hoaks? Coming from a site called Camp4 and the reputation of tall stories from that famous hangout,I was interested if anyone else is familar with the story? I am trying to figure out if it is physically possible for what I assume is a fairly small person to boulder that high a grade or does it matter? Does size matter for the more difficult ratings? MR

This is a difficult question. Though I am very interested with this point, and I will definitely check into this Camp4 website. I think that it would be difficult to say that size would matter on every single climb that would acquire a hard rating. I feel that size would matter on the individual climb itself, and not really based upon its rating.

it's not size that matters... it's how you use it and I'm sure the shorter ppl will agree with me. (and I know what you're all thinking!!!! pervs ) Here in chile there is one kid who is 13 years old, 5 feet tall at the most and he's climbing 13b's and c's, I wouldn't be very surprised if a little girl could climb a V7, future lynn hill! For those interested, here is the article/interview with the girl: http://www.camp4.com/index.php?newsid=311 Looks real to me, although I agree it's hard to believe! At the end she says her favorite band is Social Distortion - punk rock rules. I've seen SD in concert, and cannot imagine any 8 year old these days listening to them! But who knows... Maybe it's just a really small girl who really grew up in the 80's....

Outdoors height doesn't matter, us little people can actually use alot of holds that you 6 foot giants can't. But indoor routes can be different, because I've done some where no matter where I started, I'd reach a point where I couldn't reach a single hold in any direction unless jumped to reach one that was a few inches above my finger tips. All you tall people that set the holds suck! Short people ROCK!

Well... in my opinion to a certain small extent, it does. Sometimes some routes are made for tall climbers and sometimes made for shorter climbers. This is where advantege and disadvantage comes in. Then again, this DOES NOT mean that shorter climbers can't do a route for made for the taller climbers, and vice versa. Thing is, people can dyno up for a reach thats far or cramp up their body for a reach thats painfully near. Its all up to the climber really. And in the end its all down to you.

I agree that height does matter. On most climbs indoors or out height isn't a factor. Then there are those few climbs that just nail you cause of your height. I'm about 6'2" and one of my partners is 5'7". There is one climb at Castlewood that is 10d/11a. It bags me everytime cause of my height. I can't ball up enough to make it easy. My bud has no problems sending it. Then there is another 11a that he can't even make the reach on and I have no problem with it. Moral of the story? None really.
