I read this article this morning. Couldn't remember if 74 was Clear Creek or not. Sounded like somebody hiking around got themselves into a semi climbing situation and blew it. Probably not an actual climber at all. We'll have to see if more gets reported about it or not.

Where is the southside embankment? The approach up to Highwire? Or the area by the main pulloff as you enter the canyon? They need to hire me to write these stories. I hate it when the media reports climbing accidents and they leave out all the details that really tell the story. I have a feeling that climber=equals hiker in this case but I could be wrong. Whoever he is, I hope he is okay.

Which of the two following headlines is more likely to get you to pay attention?

Hiker Injured After Losing Footing

-OR-

Climber Falls 100 Feet Into Raging River

By the nature of our media being competitive, sensationalism is used to sell ads and make money. Never forget that the bottom line is making a profit.

It also never ceases to amaze me how inaccurate nearly every article on municiple water systems are (the field I work in). It makes me wonder how accurate the rest of the news I see and read is.

Cheers,
Chris

Between that and the simple confusion over what we do, just about anyone who ascends any sort of terrain that is not completely horizontal is often considered a "climber." You wouldn't believe the number of people who refer to the climbing team I coach as a "mountain climbing club."
