On quickdraw sets. What are the pros/cons of bent gate vs straight gate?

Bents are supposed to be easier to clip the ropes with. Straights are very slightly less likely to open when you don't want em to. Some people likes the use the straight for hanger or gear always and the bent for the rope always so that any nicks on the biner from the gear or bolt hanger never touch the rope.

In reply to: In reply to: i would imagine it would be between bent vs. wiregate. I would imagine that you're wrong. I would imagine that you should look at the context. Rope end of the draw? The debate is bent gate or wire gate. In that case- jowanky is right, ain't he? I prefer wiregates personally- easier to clip and no gate lash if it hits the rock. On the hanger end- all I have are stright gate, but I preger my keylock positrons over the quicksilver2's. But it's all about personal preference. Find out what you like, then buy what you like within your price range.

The original question did not refer to a bent gate vs. a wire gate, it refers to a bent gate vs. a normal straight gate biner. Look at Dirtineye's post. He answers the question well, showing the pros and cons of straight gates and bent gates. I would imagine if you looked at this again, you would see it correctly.

I have bent wiregates on the rope end and straight wires on the bolt end. They kick ass and clip super easy.

The pros of bentgates is that they are easier to clip into the rope while hanging from the tips of a finger and a half while contorting your body into unnatural positions. The con of them is that if you clip in with the wrong biner/the biner is facing the wrong way, it is easier for the rope to fall on the gate and remove itself from the quickdraw (this is bad). If you learn to set them properly from someone who knows their trad/sport safety backwards and forwards, you should have nothing to worry about though.

I've deferred this decision until I get to the point where the angle of the gate is the limiting factor on my climbing ability. Until then, I'm focusing on the optimum type of chalk.
