I've been battling to find the right balance in the amount of climbing i do each week. I used to climb every day except a Wednesday and then go to a crag on saturday or sunday. How much climbing should you aim to do in a week.I've been carrying a few injuries from too much climbing so i was wondering if anybody could help on the subject?really appreciate any help i can get!

Not that i would be able to answer anyway but... how long have you been climbing for? I started climbing 4 times a week after climbing only 4 or 5 times and after a month i had to take two weeks off and lots of glucosomine for my elbow. So for me even 3 or 4 times a week was to much.

Not counting weekend trips I climb at the gym about 4 times a week for an hour and a half each visit.

I started seriously last year August. In April this year i almost dislocated my left shoulder on an easy route.I find that a lot of gym climbing helps in the stamina department but too much leads to problems. All about balance i guess.Warm up technique may be an issue? Thanks for the help!

I try to go at least twice a week during the school year. On tuesdays, I usually climb from 5 to 9, and on Saturdays, from 12 to 7. That's usually enough for me but I try to go more. It's 2 km from me, so I like to bike there, which also adds to my workout.

Last year I used to go to the gym 4 -5 times a week for 3-4 hours each time. After awhile I developed an elbow injury that took a few weeks of no climbing to heal. Now that I am in grad school I have much less time and have been climbing outside 1-2 nights a week, usually from 6-9 (except last week when it got dark on us), and all day saturday. On some in-between days I will do some training on my hangboard. This routine has not bothered any of my joints yet.

NOt nearly enough, its not availibility or being too busy its not having any transportation. I wish I could climb alot more but thirteen/fourteen yr olds can't drive in this state. The worst injury I've ever gotton was a few scrapes on knuckels and arms.

I ususally climb Tues. and Thurs for about 3 hours in the gym or outdoors. I also udually do both days on the weekend for as long as possible. It has been pretty good to me for injury prevention.

Three days a week is my upper limit. I quit smoking this year and was climbing nearly every day to replace the urge (didn't help, BTW), and climbing hard for four or five hours per evening. Then I started waking up at 3 a.m. with my knees and shoulders on fire. Clearly, I was overdoing it. So, now, it's Monday and Wednesday if I'm planning a weekend, and Tuesday and Thursday if not. But then I'm lucky to be close to cool diversions.

i never climb on fake stuff. I just dont like it that much, kinda boring. I guess i'm kindof lucky because i live like 20 min from the fatty crags in Auburn. I've been up there 5 outa 7 days this past week, but next week i'll prolly not climb at all, maybe 1 day of a bit of bouldering but nothin that crazy. I pulled my first .10c yesterday tho and i'm suppper stokked. I tried it on day 1 of this week and didnt even get close, then by day 4 i pulled it prety smoothly. just find your happy medium and take it easy, i usually take prolly 30 min between climbs just to let my body calm down and recouperate (sp?) Listen to your body, it'll tell you if ur pulling to hard. Peace

I climb a few times a week - anywhere from 2-4 times, typically for close 2 hrs each time...the majority of it is on fake stuff tho. I can get to the local crag maybe 2x/month..just don't know enough peeps yet. But as the others have said, listen to your body - it will tell you when it's had enough!!! Give yourself downtime according to what your body says - not what you want. I know I have had to cut back recently due to soreness in my fingers..damn tendons! So listen to your body and make sure you stay in shape in other ways too..conditioning is good for ya! :) Peace & chicken grease--

I lift 3 days a week and climb 3 days -- yoga on the lifting days. If I feel like I've stressed something, I back-off the weights (still do yoga for flexibility) and spend some quality time with a Theracane and the hot tub. CW

I try to climb at least twice a week. Once during the week at the gym and of course the weekend anywhere outside.

You really have to listen to your own body. I can’t manage more than twice a week at my limit without getting injured. But I’m 47 years old. I could do more when I was younger. Recovery is very individual. Do you hurt the day after? Then don’t go that day. Same for the second day. Wait until you don’t hurt. Then go and pull hard. For example, you might be able to climb 5.6 every day of the week. But climb 5.10 only twice a week. Listen to what your body tells you. Oh, you WILL have to have at least one overuse injury to learn what too much is. Just laugh, learn from it, and get extra aerobic to stay in shape until you heal up. Best, Kim

I climb everyday. Like everyone else said, overdoing it is counterproductive. I do a real workout every other day and just play around during comercials on off days (my wall's in my living room). If I really jack myself up on weekends at the crags, I'll reluctantly take a day or two off. Just learn what leaves you hurting in a bad way and stay a notch or two below that. Wait until you get tendonitis, and you'll understand. You never want it. It can put you out for a week or a month depending on how quick you figure out to not push it when your body's screaming NO. Your body will tell you when you've gone too far. Listen.
