I heard that sunscreen could damage your rope, that you shouldn't handle your rope right after you put it on, any worth to that? thanks.

Don't know about damage but will definitely prevent "rope burn"

In reply to: I heard that sunscreen could damage your rope, that you shouldn't handle your rope right after you put it on, any worth to that? thanks. False. It will make your rope more greasy but it will not affect the strength or dynamic ability of the rope. Neither does DEET affect your rope. It takes mineral acids such as sulfuric acid (as in car batteries) or muratic acid (as in brick cleaners) to chemically damage a rope. If your skin can take it, so can your rope.

No damage, just suckage. Ever use a hold in a gym after some chick (pardon the slang, ma'am) uses lotion and slathers it all over? Once I had really rough splitting hands from working out at the climbing gym and my wife walked up with a handful of Vaseline to, I'm not making this up, "help my hands out." The last thought a man has when his wife walks up with Vaseline is, "Gee, that must be for my hands." I felt like my climbing was ruined for the next few days. I didn't want to grease up some hold with Vaseline and have some climber dude named Biff walk up and smack me. I guess Vaseline isn't for fun in my house. What was your question again? GT

If you're really concerned, do like I do. Just forget the sunscreen, peel 3 times from one day in the sun, and get skin cancer later when you're 45. Nah, just use something waterproof and let it dry before doing any climbing if you're so worried.

a friend of mine got really mad when another friend of mine.... (yes I know youre all thinking its me but I swear its not)... well the other friend rubbed in some of this insect repellent that comes in like creamy lotin. Well the thing is that he would not have anyone touch his rope untill his hands were clean (i e no remains of the insect repelletn).... we havn't climbed with him ever since... and not because we dont want to he just doesnt want to come along.

That is not a good rule because both urine and gasoline can touch your hands with no effect but they both damage ropes peas matt

In reply to: Neither does DEET affect your rope. That surprises me. 100% DEET eats into compass bases (sufficient to obscure numbers after a few days of use) and other plastic components, including some plastic spectacle lenses. Personally I would be cautious with it near ropes.
In reply to: It takes mineral acids such as sulfuric acid (as in car batteries) or muratic acid (as in brick cleaners) to chemically damage a rope. How about salt water? I would always wash a rope after a trip to a sea cliff. Cheers, Nick

DEET harms rayon, dynel, and acetates. It has no effect on nylon. Just because it melts one type of plastic does not mean it affects every type of plastic. DEET has been tested and found to have no effect on climbing ropes or webbing. Gasoline has no effect on nylon except to make it more flamable. Urine, soft drinks, and sea water leave sharp crystals when they evaporate. These crystals then damage the rope fibers. Let these dry on your skin and I think you would get an itch. Rinsing the rope with water removes the problem.

Forget the oil based sunscreen. Go and find the water based sunscreen. It dries up quick and doesn't give you slick hands. Good for kayaking as well....good-bye greasy hands.

The other day I put on the sunscreen then waited a few min. for it to dry on my hands before touching the rope. I just seem like the logical thing to do. Of course I had my wife to play with in the meantime.

When you read about all the stuff that can diminish a rope its kinda like how everything when used in large amounts will cause cancer or some disease. Im sure a little sunscreen isn't gonna hurt but if u lather it on in clumps maybe it will harm it.

For example, Bluewater dunked a rope in a bucket of pure DEET for weeks before testing it and it turned out to have no effect. In support of your argument, however, I have read that while bleach is harmful to ropes, a dilute solution can be used to remove blood stains.

Does anybody have a link to a website that has a report about the DEET or other contaminates effect on rope?

In reply to: I have read that while bleach is harmful to ropes, a dilute solution can be used to remove blood stains. First, I'd be a little sketch about that. Bleach is bleach, dude. I ain't a gambling man ... except the lottery, blackjack, video poker, slots and some keno. Besides, blood will usually come out with a cleaner*. Second, why would you want to remove the bloodstains? Give your rope some soul! Quoting from my rope's info package, Beal contraindicates contact with "acids, oils, or petrol". Oil based suntan lotion would seem to be a bad idea, although the water-based stuff hypothetically may be okay. coylec *cleaner (n.): "a washing agent designed for delicate textiles" (quote from Beal's info package that came with my stinger ii).
