I've been dancing all my life and I find that the strangth and flexability I gained from that definatley helped my climbing...and climbing shoes are nothing compared to pointe shoes.

I danced almost my whole childhood from about 3 till I was 16, then I quit. I quit dance because my teachers were horrible for my self-esteem. They encouraged us to be as skinny as possible and weighed us every week. I was 93 pounds (5.1) until I quit and trained so hard that I would pass out from malnutrition and exhaustion. I didn't get my period until I was 17 as a result. My team won National Champs three years in a row, but I don't think it was worth it at all. I still cringe when I see pictures of myself back then. I don't think this is true of all dancers but a majority of those I know have serious weight and eating disorders, drug problems, and relationship problems even after they stopped dancing. So the moral of this story...do it cause you love and do it in balance.

...I mourned the sight of bloody tights
An omen of swelling hips and breasts and thighs
And the fleeting passage of bloody toes.

I don't remember the rest of it.

My teacher always told us that if we wanted to be pros, we'd learn that our body was our commodity. Sadly, she was correct. She was classical ballet all the way though.

One of the things that I loved about Dunham/African was that an ample booty actually made the moves look better.

Ya climbing shoes haven't made my feet bleed yet and they sure don't pull my skin off when I take them off. I laugh at the guys when they whine about how much there feet hurt in there shoes.

My old boss was in a professional ballet company in NYC. We had a little show and tell day at work and she brought in her old slippers and we put them beside my rock shoes. They looked like cardboard sleeves almost - no support what so ever. Uggh.

She must have brought her soft slippers. Pointe (toe) shoes have wooden (or similar) soles and hardened canvas (might as well be wood) toe boxes. (Or were you talking about your climbing shoes lacking support?)

They probably were the soft slippers. And they looked like they needed a resole bad. I'm told those shoes are very expensive and wear out in no time flat. Talk about expensive hobbies.

I've climbed in my ballet slippers. They don't have as much arch support, but they do allow you to get a better feel of placements. I think they've improved my footwork.

And, for the record, womyn aren't the only ones that take ballet. it takes a real man to dance ballet or modern (at least that what I say), turns out i wasn't tough enough to endure more than 3 years.

ps- don't construe comments to insult other forms, i just have no experience with them.

I feel compelled to weigh in here since I have a dance-related username. I actually don't dance. Except at bars when really drunk, and then- badly. When I was very young I took all the girly lessons- gymnastics, ballet, jazz, tap, etc. They thought I would be a great ballerina because I was so skinny, but they failed to note my lack of grace and coordination. So "rockdancer" is more what I aspire to- the grace of someone moving across the rock like a dancer.

ClimbHigh's post might be having somebody thinking I can actually dance. The reason I quit was that I, like rockdancer, lack grace and coordination. Lack might actually be a nice way of saying. I'm clumsy: I've walked into doorways and walls SOBER. And coordination? nah. plus, i don't really have an ear for rhythm.

i wish i could dance.

I used to dance (pre-professional ballet), but quit before actually auditioning for companies when I was 17. It stopped being fun... it really hit me that I WAS a commodity.. I was disposable.. I was just a body to be tested to its limits. Realized I'd be happier with a 'real' job and college education.

Have been looking for something as intense as that level of ballet for years, and haven't found it yet - climbing might be it, though. :) I'm very excited about climbing - you get the mental AND physical aspect, never-ending challenge, infinte room for improvement, need for strength, determination, and grit... and there's the endorphin rush from doing something really HARD. Plus, the element of danger.. heh. It's like that professional level of ballet: very dangerous if you're not careful, strong, and awake.

Dancing is my second love.... african dance- contact improv - trapeze dancing in tucson with the orts company classes-- i love taking classes - did a belly dance class yesterday in bisbee-- 1st one-- i don't like following routines-- it's like having beta being told to you on a sport climb- dancing like climbing comes more instinctually for me -- in and out of the right brain-- so i'd rather do my dancing in my space or hip and hop and move with the spirit on any ole dance floor-- the dancing at the pbc a few years back was one of the best dancing out-- it was like gentle moshing and the center where we were all spinning and making contact had a beautiful force------ i hope there will be good dancing there this year -

I size my climbing shoes 3 - 3-1/2 sizes down from street, to fit my narrow heels. .

3-3.5 sizes down from your street shoes! Wow... I thought a size was good! But more power to ya!

I used to dance almost every day while growing up. Ballet mostly. When I hit 5'10" I realized I did it just for fun. I took modern and ballroom classes at college. Now I just do yoga to keep in shape and stay limber. I can see how being thin and tall helps with climbing.
