Illimaniman,

Have you managed to find the commercial (I think it was for VISA) of the two guys hanging in the portaledge listing off the sports that are too risky for them (like surfing  )?

Colin

I don't think I've ever seen that Visa one. Unfortunately, I no longer have a subscription to the site where I got those videos. I have posted pretty much everything that I could find, though. I first searched for all the ads I could remember, then did a search for "climbing," "rock," etc. and downloaded everything I could find. No Visa ads showed up in my searches.

Here's the site where I got the videos. You may be able to search without purchasing a membership and see if you can find more climbing ads.

I downloaded and kept all of those commercials except the Adidas one... that one doesn't want you to buy cologne... it wants you to be gay.

So what is with the attention by all those ads on the desert and desert towers. Don't get me wrong I am very partial to wingate or even navajo, but a nice pile of granite is just as much fun! :D

Also, everyone should check out the tipped out 3.5 camalot on the Merrill Lynch ad (a little questionable for me in sandstone). I would have used a #4.

so far we have two other people claiming to be the marine climber guy......better get to the bottom of this. because I was the climber in the marine commercial - we shot it in joshua tree and there was no cgi except for changing the color of the rock - we did it in HVC and I did it all without a rope. then I base jumped from the top and the ad company ended up using that footage for a merril lynch commercial.

I bouldered with Grady, a Marine climbing instructor at Santee. You have to lead a 5.9 trad in COMBAT BOOTS to qualify. The marines also climb lots of buildings and the rotten beach cliffs at Camp Pendelton. The beach cliffs are so rotten that protection is not possible. He trains about 250-300 marines a year.

I thought it was 5.7. In boots. Full pack. Could be wrong, however.

That dood in the ADIDAS commercial isn't even leading the overhang. You can see his 'other' rope running up to the top when he goes to pull the lip. Poor editiing

Back to the marines ad...

Is it just me, or does the stemming scene look like a cartoon? I could swear that guy was drawn in.

Damn. I'm a Marine, and climb some wacky stuff like the barracks and the wall outside the office. They never show that kind of stuff. More fun than that pansy cliff. Especially after a few beers.

Just to help clarify some things....sonso had written that most of the rappelling is done by special forces. Special forces is in with the ARMY. Special Operations is the marines. So when he wrote special forces, he was (hopefully) refering to the army. I know lots of Special Ops marines and they only know limited climbing skills. Maybe it's the ones I was around. However, I only know one special forces guy...and all he talks about is jumping out of planes. I'll have to ask him if he knows how to climb! Semper fi.

All the training we got was mostly rapelling, but some pretty sick raps aussie style with suiss seats running down the wall in full combat gear with SAW, Heli rapelling from 300 feet. Any ascending usually included low grade 5.5 - 5.7 in combat boots with limited protection and setting up huge anchors to haul 100's of pounds of gear up.

Rapelling was fun climbing not so much in the army.

Well, ya know- just like anything you have different needs for climbing. Same in the military. When it comes to climbing training, you have your standard rappelling like mentioned before (used for standard SF/Recon/SEAL training), and you have your more specific levels ranging from trad climbing with shoes and a full rack to mountaineering to ice climbing. There are schools (not sure whether service specific or not) out at Bridgeport that do mountain leader courses, both summer and winter at varying levels. The one my buddy was trying to get into involved 5.10 climbing trad and summitting Mt Shasta at the end of the course. I wonder if one of the schools is for cool studly moves and image transformations upon summiting

If you remember when the Army changed their logo from be all you can be to an army of one they came out with a new add campaign. They came to Colorado and we were asked to film shots. It was fairly cheesy as all comercials of this sort but a soldier dressed in white ascends a ridge and links up with his buddies and all is well..That was filmed at a local 14'er here in colorado...anyway I instruct for the Army SOF mountaineering course..We teach Aid, Free, Mixed, Rescue blah blah blah.we go to Alaska or Washington to climb and really are just climbing and skiing bums in a funny looking christmas tree outfit..Here is a pic in Alaska and Boulder, Co

My favorite part of the Merryl commercial is that he does all that climbing on loose sandstone sans helmet and then puts on a helmet to do the BASE jump. Do BASE jumpers usually wear helmets? I can't imagine it would help. I thought you only used those when you were jumping close to other people (out of an airplane) and were worried about bumping heads.

does anybody remember if a while back there was another climbing comercial for the marines or army i think i remember a differnet one...

I remember another one, shows the guy climbing up close, then pans way out. I can't remember what the commercial was for and only have a vague recollection of it. But I do remember that I liked the panned out scene.

I liked this one more than the snickers energy bar commercial with the word pain or agony or whatever on the bottom of the shoe. What the heck is that anyway?
