So far we have quite a group of adults and kiddos shaping up for Shelf. I think I'm going to try to reserve the group site at the Bank, if that's possible. Sooooo, if anyone needs a plot of dirt, let me know. If enough kiddos show, we may stay the entire weekend. Just as long as the kiddos are having fun. More details to come on Wed or Thurs.

Yo mother_sheep,

Who do you call to reserve spots at the bank? I'm heading down to shelf the weekend after the holiday and planned to camp. Thought it was BLM land and was first come first serve, but you probably know something I don't seeing as I've never been there.

Thanks in advance,

KT

KT - Congrats on the house! I'm happy for you. I know the next month is just going to roll by like a whirlwind - but enjoy the breeze.

Shelf - I don't think they have anything juggy at Shelf do they? I'll look up in the guide.

I might join you all this weekend. I'm looking to climb or go for a hike. Considering a hike to Pear Lake in the RMNP or a few others in Never Summer....so many hobbies so little time. :)

Yeah, there's enough good easy/moderate stuff to keep you busy. The Staircase and Moby Grape are both must dos in that range, and pleanty of other less popular mods...

Sharpie, you're thinking of 11 mile!
Not quite sure how many moderates Shelf has..
Crynoid Corner(5.7) at Cactus is the only one that comes to mind.

I guess I'm out then - no Shelf for me this weekend. I am going to do one or two of the following:

1. Wind Tower - Breezy, Boulder Direct(?)
2. South Platte - Skinner Mountain - Wally World/1937 Route
3. Lumpe - Not sure?
4. Overnight Backpack Pear Lake Creek or somewhere else similiar

Anyone interested in tackling something juggy - let me know.

Hey bustinmins Cactus Cliff at Shelf does have one 5.7, a few 5.8, and enough 5.9 to keep you busy for a couple days. Its really the only area in Shelf that's like this. The rest of shelf you won't really find routes below 5.10 sitting next to each other like you can at Cactus. I don't know if this changes your opinion but just thought I would let you know.

Hey Guys (in the generic non-male/female term) - if I showed up on Saturday, would there be any interest in showing the ropes to me? Anyone going to be on those easier routes? This would be my first outdoor climbing trip.

Sure Steve. I'm going to leave a note at the outhouse in the Gallery and also at the registration station at the Bank so anyone that wants to join us can. But please be aware that my group is shaping up to be quite a family gathering, meaning lots of kids. So far I have received a tentative 7 yes' from adults. It looks like we have 7 kiddos as well. But these are all tentative and unless I can snag the group site, we won't be camping together. But anyone is welcome to share a plot of dirt wherevere I am. The plan is to climb at Cactus Cliff on Saturday. I will be heading back on Sunday afternoon to bivy and climb the Aprons on Evans. I have room for 1 more adult and 1 more child in my truck. I'm leaving Centennial at 5:00 PM on Friday. If this schedule works, I can take a couple of extra bodies up. PM me if you need a ride. This thread doesn't seem to be showing up on the front page so I haven't been keeping up with it as normal.

Kyle. . .I'm pretty sure you're right about the camping at Shelf. It is first come/first served. Blah.

Doh! My bad, was in Missouri for so long I’m not thinking strait. I corrected my post to say:

Alexi's Route
Crynoid Corner
Time Square
Period Piece

These are all worth doing, but there's definitely not as much good moderate stuff at shelf as 11 mile. Sorry bustinmins...

I'm feeling kinda left out of the whole Shelf trip! I already have plans to do a couple of routes on Hallet's Peak this weekend though. You people have fun and try not to get too drunk.

I went to Shelf and 11-mile instead. My brakes are shot on my truck (again). But it turned out to be a most excellent weekend, even with the diverted trip.

The Aprons are fun. The last time I climbed them, I stashed my snowboard at the top and rode down. That was much more fun than rapping the gully.

Yeah, there are slings all the way down the gully. That loose rock is so shhity it's just easier to rap it.

The gully I'm thinking of is to the west of the Aprons, once you top out if you go right on the ridge it should be the first easy gully you run in to.

If the gully is not full of snow it can be a real bowling alley, if you go this way go one at a time and get out of the way while the second is descending.

But seriously, skis or a board are the way to go. Or, you could also go left at the ridge and walk around to a lower angle couloir, down climb a little then glissade to the base.
