Climb with a pistol huh? Isn't it a bit heavy to be carrying one on the cliff, unless of coarse your packing a 'ladies' gun.

It's funny to see this thread as I was just about to post a photo of how we got my dog down the ladders at Endless Wall at the New River Gorge... maybe I won't now. Anyway, I have a 20lb beagle who LOVES LOVES LOVES the hike-ins to the crags. I think he thinks he's tracking people. I take him on some trips, and I don't on others. It just depends. But, I keep in on a leash and I rig him up to trees well out of the way of gear and ledges and other things that are neither good for him nor good for other people. I don't take him to places that are crowded or when I expect to be on multiple pitches. All of this sounds like common sense to me. But I am continually amazed at how stupid people can be with their dogs. A guy we ran into at Red River gorge allowed his really scary pitbull-looking dog to run all up and down the trail and around the corner out of his site. Very annoying, scared us a lot, and we left. Another guy at that same crag allowed his off-leash dog to tease mine. We were there first, they picked a climb next to us and weren't able to restrain their dog. Turns out it wasn't even his dog! I have a big thing against dogs being off leash in any place -- you never know when they're going to bolt into traffic, run off a cliff as someone described earlier, or even bite someone (happened to a friend at Rumney). I'd also worry that my off leash dog might wander up to a snake or other menacing wilderness creature. I think dogs can have a place at the crags (drag you broken-legged ass out if you fall ;) ), but a lot of times people don't. Behind ever dumb dog is a dumber person.

I prefer a burger at the crag, but a dog will do so long as there is mustard and plenty of relish.

Those ladies guns can be jammed in a crack if you already used your #12 stopper and bulletholes make it possible to climb blank faces.....just like the route Turkey Shoot at Turkey Rocks,CO.

In reply to: Originally posted by pcrewfan: I read the other thread that was linked to this one. Christ people!! Bottom line, if you bring your dog it better be ON A LEASH!!!! That's it, and that will solve 99.999999999% of the problems people have with dogs. And don't try and feed us this crap of, "Oh, well people without dogs don't understand the unique and interesting bond between us and...blah, blah, crap.....! I don't care. I have a dog, I love her very much, and will never bring her climbing because I have to devote my TIME AND ATTENTION to the person climbing 60ft up the wall, NOT my damn dog. That's it, peace ya'll. Wow, plenty of ALL CAPS typing and !!!!!!!!!!!! for someone to end there rant with "Peace ya'll" Tell us how you really feel.

It has been covered before but is worth repeating if only in the hope that it will make at least one dog owner think twice about bringing their dog to the crag. There are plenty of reasons stated previously in the linked threads, already here on this thread, as well as easily recognized by anyone with an ounce of common sense as to why bringing a dog to the crag isn't a good idea. Unfortunately it is people who bring dogs to the crags, and asking people to use common sense on this issue never seems to work.

I bring my dog to the crag (as well has hiking, biking, camping and soon paddling). If you don’t like it, you’re more then welcome to climb somewhere else. I feel I am a responsible owner and that my dog is well behaved. He is happy to be included and I enjoy his company and I won’t have it any other way. I personally don’t give a shit what anyone has to say about it. If he can manage to somehow walkover your gear, then don’t be such a slob, tidy your shit up. That being said I have never encountered any conflicts either.

I wouldn't bring my dog with me. Dogs are pack animals and you're the alpha dog. When you climb up and leave them at the base they think you've abandoned them and they're going to die. That's why some dogs act out: piss everywhere, tear things apart. That's not something I would want to do to the dog I love. Now maybe your dog is well adjusted. But I think it is better to leave them home in an environment they know is safe. Kim
