Are we killing ourselves?

A while ago I went to the doctor to get a sports physical. I can do that thing when you twist your neck it pops a whole bunch of times, like you see in the movies and other people can do it. But I asked him if that was ok, like if I was doing damage to myself. And he just said, "well, does it hurt?" and I said no, actually it feels really good. So he said if it doesn't hurt it's not bad for you, if it hurts, it would be. So hot damn, cause climbing hurts way bad every time. I know obviously that what we're doing to our bodies isn't really good, but I mean does this mean if we start climbing when we're teenagers, or even younger, that we're gonna be crippled hurting vegetables? Cause heck, my toes hurt when I walk around in my normal shoes now, and my fingers are usually sore. So are we just having a good time now, to pay the price later?

welcome to getting old. it is a hard cold fact that if you train your body at professional levels that you will be training in pain by your thirtys. as much as training makes you strong it also wears out your joints and ligaments. Over training can and does criple you.

Call me crazy, but I would venture that climbing's positive aspects--general exercise, aerobic & anaerobic activity, flexibility, plus the mental stimulation--far outweigh the damage you are doing.

The best way to ensure longevity is to eat very low calories and get only modest exercise. But what kind of quality of life is that?

EDIT: Doctors could tell you that you are exacerbating arthritis, tendon damage, etc, etc, but as long as climbing doesn't cause impotence, no guy's gonna give it up!

I have come to the conclusion that just about everything I do is killing me.
I drink too much carbonated soda, I don't eat enough vegetables and fruits, I eat too much pre-packaged, processed food, I drive too fast, I use too many electronic devices that bombard me with cancer causing microwaves, I mountain bike, I rock climb, I don't floss, I vote republican.

BUT

I am killing myself with a great big smile on my face and I am not killing anybody else directly.

From the very moment we emerge from our mother's womb we are dying.

The question is did we learn something in the mean time and our we leaving this place beter than we found it?

Nope. The question is.. are my fingers always going to feel like this in the morning? 2 part answer:

1. No. They will actually feel much worse if you take up aid climbing
2. Yes, as long as you climb the way you do, and train the way you do, your fingers are going to hurt and may eventually fall off.

THAT's the truth.

Classic. Just classic. Replace "republican" with "democrat", or "libratarian", or "on America's Idol", and its still true, oh its all true!

I disagree.
Every year, more and more people start climbing.
Every year, the life expectancy of the average American increases.

Obviously not only is climbing good for you, but it is essential to the ongoing health of our nation as a whole, regardless of who you vote for.

They should build a center for all of us when we're all hurtin from living it up, and we can just live there and tell of our climbing stories, and get fed and massages. :D

Hell yeah and old climbers home. Instead of a gym though could we buy a crag and build the place there while leaving access open for everyone else.

As far as killing ourselves, what doesn't kill you makes you stronger and last I checked I wasn't dead yet.

That is not entirely correct... a more accurate statement would be.
"Everyday you are a little bit closer to death. How much so depends on when you die"

:)

Life is killing us all. I agree with most here, climbing has helped me more than hurt me for health.

I'll tell you that all this 9-5 corporate B.S. is killing me faster than climbing. Climbing is the only thing that makes me feel alive. I would rather have a painful pro-longed death of foot and hand necrosis, and 'the white lung" because of climbing than live behind this flickering computer monitor chained to what my boss holds between his thumb and fore-finger for the rest of my life...

I think that there are worse sports on the body unless you fall. I find that rock climbing is easyer on the body than other sports such as motocross or skiing but you can still get an exiting feeling.

Had serious problems with my backbone before and my orthopedist gave me but a little chance to be painfree. Since I started climbing the pain is completly gone. Saves my day.

Okay, I sold it for blistered fingers, slivering nails, scratched elbows, dented knees, sore muscles, aching feet and people looking at my scrambled body as if I had a car accident... but HEY it's a price I pay with a smile

I don't know how other women feel, but I'm happy to put up with the bruises, cut knees and knuckles, ratty cuticles and nails, farmer tan, belayer's neck, sore toes, etc., as long as I get to climb. I'm in a similar "don't take weapons to work" mode and climbing may be killing me and damaging my feminine charms, but it keeps me relatively sane.

Sitting on a couch eating chips and watching TV will kill you faster. I agree climbing has helped with my health. Like they say... No Pain No Gain!

At 37 I'm now statistically 1/2 done with my life. I think climbing makes that end seem further away.

Hey melbatoast, are we related? I don't recall seeing you at the last family reunion (unless you were behind that big assed bageltoast).

I just gave up smoking to improve my stamina for longer and harder climbs. I'd like to think this will greatly improve my condition of living.
