black mountain, la jolla cove Also, any location will be pretty bearable during early morning and late afternoon (unless it's one of those 115 degree days).

There's this little place you may have heard of called Yosemite National Park. Well, with in Yosemite is an area called Tuolumne Meadows. Check it out. You might just find some bouldering on what has to be some of the best granite on this planet.

Horse Flats, Pine Mtn., Black Mtn., Tramway at Palm Springs, Malibu Creek boulders are getting some traffic lately. How about going for the complete traverse of the cave boulder...?

In reply to: What are some good summer bouldering areas in California? California is a large state, can you narrow the field some?

Bouldering in Yosemite is like jacking off in a whore house. Go to Black Mountain in Idyllwild or J Tree at night.

NorCal Bouldering Areas: Coastal: Lost Rocks Houda Point Moonstone Stinsons Beach Fort Ross Secrets Many other smaller coastal areas Bay Area: Castle Rock Indian/Mortar Other Smaller Berkely Based Areas Sierras Yosemite & Meadows Donner Bliss Big Chief Many Smaller Areas Around Sonora Pass and Beyond Lassen has some good bouldering even though it is at decent elevation it still gets smoking hot. Eastside might be worth a stop  Basically anywhere you go you can find something nearby.

Yosemite is too hot in the summer, the already detestable greese on the holds become so slimy and slippery you might as well add a grade or two. Head to pine mtn or develop some stuff near wishon.

Try "Way Lake Boulders" in the Lakes Basin above Mammoth Lakes. It's at around 10,000ft. Good August until Octoberish. Mosquitoes bad prior to that, snow after that. It is schist and there are around 150 problems. "These boulders are latest rage on the Eastern Sierra bouldering, and rightly so. They are summer/fall boulders only and are situated in the Lakes Basin above Mammoth Lakes at 9,000 feet. Drive to Lake Mary and Coldwater campground. At the lower trailhead parking area (Emerald Lake trailhead) there is a latrine, park here. Take Emerald Lake trailhead to where it goes left, carry straight on following the creek past a water tank, for 20 minutes to a creek crossing over two logs tied together and planed flat. Cross the creek and follow the trail, then left through some boulders, through a meadow to the foot of a hill. On the west (your right) is a large boulder-talus slope. The boulders are in and on either side of this talus slope, some in the woods. These schist boulders stretch all the way to TJ Lake." From the Rockfax online guide SECRETS OF BISHOP BOULDERING by Mick Ryan. http://www.rockfax.com/publications/miniguides/item.php?id=52 best regrads, Alfonso

In reply to: Bay Area: Castle Rock Indian/Mortar Other Smaller Berkely Based Areas I dont know if I'd call Castle Rock a summertime bouldering area. Its more of an early-mid fall/autumn area because the rock gets greasy really fast in the summer and its incredibly uber-hard to stick slopers; the majority of the problems at Castle are sloper problems. That, and the bugs are out to get ya.

I just spent some time in Santa Barabara on a business trip and tried out "The Lizards Mouth/Brickyard". What a spectacular place! The view from the ridge looking out over Santa Barbara to the ocean is spectacular and there are tons of problems on pretty good sandstone. The rock is a bit like Pine Mountain but not as abrasive and the holds don't break as often. Lots of highballs in the 5.7 to V0+ range also.

Black Mountain, Totally fun and some thought provoking highballs. Bring a friend and a FEW crash pads.
