Why is it that this has never worked? Is it ever going to work?

I have to agree, it'd be great if it would work!

It's working right now. If your chosen search term doesn't work, try another.

The search function fails miserably because the people posting on RC.com spell like johnson. People can't spell their search words so they don't get matches. When somebody does spell a search word correctly, they still don't get results because nobody else knows how to spell.

Actually, I've not had much trouble using the search function. I think many people claim to have done a search, but don't really make much of an effort. They would rather just start up a new repeat topic.

I don't think it's working becuase I just typed "cam" into the seach box and didn't get anything. There should be at least one (or a million) posts about cams in the furums.

No, it definitely doesn't work. Unless I am doing something drastically wrong, I can't get the search function to work at all. I've often typed in the names of posts that I know I've seen on the front page, and they won't show at all. Something's fishy. . . .

I used to be frustrated as well with the search function on rc.com. However, I found a way to search the site using Google.

To find the string "search function" on the site, go to www.google.com and enter the following into the search box:

"search function" site:rockclimbing.com

This seems to work pretty well.

I have noticed the search engine is very particular and like complete words better.

I type in gri and get no hits. I type grigri and got lots of hits

I typed cam and got nothing. I typed cams and got a bunch of hits

Just keep tryin.... and be more complete with words

Using the quick search, "cam" didn't come up with any hits for me. Then I tried "cams" and it yeilded over 500 hits. I tried "powercams," which I didn't think would do well. It brought up ~20 hits. "Camalots" was also very useful. I also looked for blindfolded climbing and a few other random climbing-related subjects.

To me, searching doesn't mean looking in one place for something. It means putting a bit of effort in, working from different angles, etc. Do a rc.com search, look a couple of pages back in the appropriate forum(s), do a standard google search. I have not tried the "site search," but the "quick search" feature seems to generate something with a bit of effort.

the problem with 3-letter terms is that the search database needs to be reindexed to handle them. we use mysql's fulltext search and it defaults to a 4-letter cut off. there is no stemming at this point -- if you type 'camalot', it searches for 'camalot', not 'camalots' or 'C4' (this will change). I'll reindex the search database now; the full ('Forums Search') will go live as soon as I get the change to vet it.

The 3-letter vs. 4-letter issue is a configuration issue. I'll remedy that right now.

nb. I just rebuilt the index to accomodate this.

Relevance-based search will be delivered in the next 24-48 hours and that'll be the end of this quibble. Begin formulating your next gripe now ;-)

Thanks Tim - you're the best. If you need coding help, why don't you ask the people in this forum who have complained that it doesn't work ... they seem to care enough about it that they'd be willing to help you out. As always, if you've got anything for a PR major to do, lemme know.
