What are we to do? For those of us who have to work for a living...how do you climb more than just those 2 days off? I only climb outdoors and only have time to climb once or maybe twice a week. Should we all request a climbing wall at work? How do any of you climb more than once a week? This is killing me, I only want to climb but that won't pay my bills. Help

Sick days, sick days, sick days. Or do what I did- quit my job to go climbing/ backpacking. They didn't want to give me the time off. It seems that apathy in the work world pays off in the vertical world of rock.

My advice- once you have gear you no longer need money. Once you're to that point, join the dark side. Sell everything that you own that is not climbing related and be a nomadic climber. Thats what I plan to do. Who needs money when all it causes is climbing's arch nemesis- stress.

No worries brother.
Peace

Dude

The best thing to is to invest in a wall at home. That way you can climb as soon as you get home from work.

Rock on.

I feel your pain maddie. I should come to Australia and we can cuise the crags down there a while. We can weave hemp jewelry and sell cigarettes that we buy in bulk to make money for food and travel.Sounds good to me. Luckily I only have one more year of schoolin' left.

Peace

Become a teacher. During the school year, especially the first few years of teaching, you work 80 hours a week, but you also get the summers off. I'm interviewing right now to find a teaching job for next fall. . . When the interviewer asks, "What are the three most important reasons behind your decision to become a teacher," I say, "June, July, and August!"

I have alway told myself that my life and family is more important than my job. If I work and average 50+ a week and it is continous for a year. I will look for another job that does not require that much time.

Well i dont work yet but i think that it applies to students or peopple that have to study as well because i havent got climbing because of my school work and exams for a year or two the good thing was they had a mountaineering club but i am more into the rockclimbing than hill walking, and i wasnt very happy about it.

So i no how you feel in a way.

Well you have gotten responses from people who do not have jobs, mortgages, family, retirement, college tuition, etc to worry about let me offer you some advise. First of all the climbing gym is your friend. It is open late so you can go after work and get a good workout. You can build a small wall in your house but building a decent wall can get expensive and will get boring pretty quick unless you are all hardcore about your training program and can push through the drudgery.

Try to talk to your boss about working a more flexible schedule. Either 4 10 hour days or something so you get more time off. I work 9's and get every other friday off. I have planned the fridays so that they are coordinated with a monday holiday so I get 6 4 day weekends a year. Also try telecommuting or something like that. Since it sounds like you work more than the standard 40 hour week (Like 50-60 hours) and don't get overtime pay you could try to talk to your boss about getting some comp time. They probably won't give you an hour off for every hour of overtime you work but you can negotiate something where you get an hour off of work for every 3 hours of overtime you work. That way for every 30 hours of over time you work you get an extra day off. Most employers will find that reasonable especially since they are not paying you for your overtime.

I have to agree with you, there are a lot of climbers that can't do much during the week. Because of work my only option is the gym during the week. And that is only twice. But I can still get out on the weekends.

i completely understand the timing problem. i'm in both college and highschool full-time (well, half-time highschool) and, get this, i don't drive! that means that not only do i have to find time, but i also have to find a ride AND i live in the flattest state in the country: florida. that means i only get gym time. you know, REAL climbing means taking a week off and driving up north somewhere where rocks exist. you really only need 2 days a week to stay in shape anyway, but i know that does nothing for that itch climb.

you could always consider a career as a geologist with national geographic...

I made a deal with my boss to spread out my holiday time. Tack an extra day onto the long weekends, or create your own long weekends. Think of the possibilities, at least 1 or 2 long weekends every month. Or a long weekend, every weekend from July to September.
....and the little mtngrrl lived happily ever after.....

A climbing wall in your basement is a very good suggestion. Not only can you stay at home, but your fam is right there with you. If they aren't already, it's a good way to start them up too! Just an idea!
