In reply to: And btw, "because its there" is Ed Hillary if I'm not mistaken. Ed Hillary said:" Well George, We knocked the bastard off" to George Lowe after the first ascent

In reply to: In reply to: "you don't die from the fall, you die from hitting the ground" It's not the fall that kills you... it's the sudden stop at the end !!! My personal version of this when talking to a non climber is... "I am not afraid of falling anymore, just the sudden stop at the end."

This was not a statement by a climber, but I still consider it that way (found on the web) Recited by Astronaut Jeffery hoffman prior to re-entry of the Space Shuttle - Discovery April 1985 "You cannot stay on the summit forever. You have to come down again. So why bother in the first place? Just this - What is above knows what is below - But what is below does not know what is above. One climbs, One sees, One descends, One sees no longer. But, One has Seen. There is an art of conducting Oneself in the lower regions by the memory of what One saw higher up. When One can no longer see, One can at least still Know."

Today is your day! Your mountain is waiting. So. . . get on your way. Dr. Seuss "The best training was to go to the pub, drink 5 quarts of beer, and talk about climbing." Ron Fawcett "In the mountains there are only two grades: You can either do it, or you can't." — Rusty Baille I needed to clear my head, get some priorities... so I dropped out of college and went climbing. - Ryan Frost some of the many...

You all know the old saws about "old so and so's never die...." Old climbers never die they just lose their friends (or nuts if you prefer)

I can't believe I've read five pages of quotations and failed to see my favourite one, from the almight wolfgang... "mono's are great, they're like a rest for all the other figures" another personal favourite was yelled at me on my first ever lead climb when I slipped and took a heap of skin off my knuckles... "quit whining, it all grows back eventually" (a cam or two almost made a musterious exit from my harness in the general direction of my belayer until I realised where that would leave me)

"Yeah, but isn't it great just being here?" -- Rick Mosher to his partner (name unknown to me) while sitting out a brutal storm on Annapurna IV in the late 70's. He meant it, too.

The best quote I've heard about climbing is in my signature. It was said by some random German sport climber some friends ran across. Say it to yourself in a thick German accent and then think about how true it really is! Don't you find that angry climbers seem to have trouble committing to moves because they are too busy being mad and thinking about what they look like to the people on the ground? Just a thought...

"Big wall climbing. A strange pursuit. What reason could account for people committing such vast amounts of time, energy and money into crawling up humongous blobs of granite while toing hundreds of pounds of gear behind them? The best explanation I have heard is "to get the the haulbags tot he top" -- Sean Easton, 2002 Metolius Climbing Catalogue "Ok, lets get off of this thing" -- my partner and I before beginning a route in our local alpine training grounds.
