how to get the smell out of the nalgene?

so my brother in law borrowed the nalgene type bottle i had left in his car, and made a banana smoothie in it, drank said smoothie, tightened cap, and allowed to ferment for i dunno how long. he came to visit last week, i found the bottle in his car, and when i went to open it, he said that i shouldn't open it as they had made a smoothie, etc...and it was gonna stink.

as i started to loosen the cap, the familiar "pssst" sound came from the cap. so i tightened it right away, and the smell that did leak out already was horrendous.

i took it home, soaked it in soapy water for a couple of days, and washed it out several times. now it's dry and still smells like fermented bananas.
what can i do to get the smell out? i have yet to try vinegar, which usually works for clothes...do you guys/girls have any ideas? i'd hate to throw away an 8 dollar bottle.

Unfortunately, I think sandbag might be right. but try leaving it open for a few days or a week to air out. That usually works to get the musty water smell out, but I don't know if it will work for bananas...errrr

bleach and then listerine. throughly wash out the bleach then shake it with some listerine in it, seperatly let some listerine sit in the cap to get at the gunk in the threads.

for not so strong smells/tastes just use listerine on its own

(any strong minty mouth wash will work)

Is this the white plastic type of nalgene or a pretty colored (or grey) lexan bottle? If it is the former, sandbag is right, if it is the latter, you should be able to get the smell out....dishwashers can do wonders...

Funny.

Try freezing the bottle as well, some mold/germs are killed by low temps. Not sure if this hurts a nalgene, I would guess not.

Any sort of citrus juice - preferrably lemon, lime and grapefruit.

Go with lemon.

put a shot of bleach in and top it off with water and let it set for a few days. Turn the bottle and let stand on end every other day so you get the lid also. might work!

Or demote to pee bottle

if a drink can "bleach" a bottle with its smell...why dont you keep strawberry's or some other fruit in it and store it in the refrigerator for 5 or so days. Maybe that will bleach it as well.

Don't use bleach...

wrap a coal (yeah, like one you use to cook with) in newspaper and then put it inside your nalgene. With the newspaper and coal inside, put the lidless nalgene through your dishwasher cycle. If it's bad, do it twice. Works like a charm. if that doesn't work, try this:

fill nalgene with jack. Drink contents. Take a whiff. See, it doesn't smell...

Find a healthy white cat and swing it over your head. Then bury the Nalgene about 2/3 of the way down in sandy soil while holding your breath. Pray to a diety (any diety). I swear this will work. If it doesn't, I've had good luck with bleach.

Here's the guarenteed way to get the smell out of nalgene in 7 simple steps.

1. Take the cap and screw if firmly onto the bottle. Make sure it is snug, but don't overtighten!

2. Walk to the nearest garbage can.

3. Open the lid of the can.

4. Deposit the nalgene bottle in the garbage can. (trust me, its easy)

5. Close the lid.

6. Go buy another one. Hand the receipt to your banana smoothie brother in law (and good god man, what sort of man did your sister marry???)

7. Good day.

DMT

ps. Sorry for the BIL harrassment, but really, a banana smoothie???

Here’s a trick. Go get those dissolving tablets used to clean dentures. Can't speak for your bottle, but there aint' nothing nastier then gramma’s ol' dentures. Pop em in your bottle filled with water. Leave it over night. Ta-da!!! You’re bottle’s like new.

Who still buys those over priced containers?...........Go get a freaking gatorade or power aid drink, a buck fifty. Next time the funk comes to be, rinse once, and go recyle the damn thing. Rather simple

I vote on the Baking soda by far will do it, I once left a jack and coke in my bottle for a week during a backpacking trip, and the baking soad finally did the trick.

TRUST ME ON THIS ONE !!!!!!

First step... hydrogen peroxide, one heaping tbs baking soda, and dish soap... shake vigorously and stand back in case it blows

after a couple of hours smell should be gone... if EXTREME smells are present... stage 2 - throw in pool for 3 to 4 days

Problem solved
