In reply to: In reply to: I would estimate my climbing gear is near 2K. If you factor in things it takes to climb (other outdoor gear, tent...) I would add probably another 2K to that. So it cost me 4K to go climbing. :-) And who are the fools that dare say outdoor climbing is CHEAPER than indoor climbing!?!? I've never read anything that says outdoor climbing is cheaper. Anybody with a 5th grade education could pick up a mountaingear catalog and see that cams are not cheap. Even if you are just a sport climber, outside is going to cost more. But its way more fun. Go outside!

About 2 healthy mortage payments, without taking into consideration the requisite camping gear, lights, etc... Add another mortage payment to cover the camping gear! :?

In just my trad rack I have $2,200.00 in cams and stoppers. Not including biners, shoes, harness, ropes. Camping gear=alot og dough. Snowboards & bindings times 3 equals $2,600.00 and then if I count all the back country equpt. like peeps, probes and other gear. I believe I would be in the range of 8,000 to 10,000. I am a true gear head and yes I use every bit of it.

Well, I have not spent more than a few hundred, rope, 5.10 Anasazis, bunch of biners, webbing, bags, chalk bags, pads... just getting into sport, so all those fun expensive toys are on the way. However given the fact that many people seem embaressed that they buy lots of gear, Id like to shed some light: Rock climbing, at least for me, and im sure many other people, is a hobby. Granted, its a very involving and amazing hobby, but most of us don't get paid for it. When you compare it to many other hobbies, its honestly not all that expensive. For example, I am studying music technology right now at the University of Dayton, as one of my hobbies, I play the oboe and e. horn. A decent high grade oboe runs about 6.5K$ (US) and E.Horns go up from there.... Plus reeds, tuxes for concerts, audition fees, hospital visits when you slice your fingers while making reeds... So mabye you guys shouldnt feel so bad about spending so much on gear, because in reality, everyone has that really expensive hobby, just in a differerent context. Connor

In reply to: I have a '98 Toyota 4-Runner. The gear in it is worth 2x more than the vehicle. '95 4Runner here...ditto the value comment. I carry more insurance on my gear (home owners policy) than I do my vehicle. I have meticulously kept all my gear-related receipts for several years now, and I'm actually afraid to total them up. If you want to keep this sport affordable, don't get into aid climbing. Ed

Let's put it this way, when I saunter into my local gear shop they cue the “Hallelujah Chorus” followed shortly thereafter by “We’re in the Money!”

Is it the money or how much fun I've gotten as a result of having a rack. I just consulted with my calculator and it said I've been climbing for about $9.37 a day. Beats the crap out of lift ticket's or even movies. The great thing is the longer I climb, the cheaper that day rate goes. These calculations did not include; bandages, campsite fees, gas, food, bug spray, sunscreen, T.P., parking fees, peanut butter, re-soles, tape, tee shirts, 3000 mile plane rides west, protien bars, guide books, putting up with B.O. or B.S or both, rental car accident's on Northside Drive (NOT my fault), cooler's, canned tuna, peanut butter, sunglasses, bribing a belayer, throw away cameras, nail clippers, shower's, and every other thing I throw money at in pusuit of another great sequence on stellar rock, even on lousy rock, just so long as I look good doing it.
